What is BrainRotGuard?

BrainRotGuard is an open-source YouTube approval system for kids. Your child gets a simple web page where they can search YouTube and request videos; every request sends you a Telegram message, and you tap Approve or Deny right in the chat. If a video is approved, it plays on the child's screen.

Upstream describes it as a middle ground between blocking YouTube entirely and leaving it open: there is no autoplay and no "up next" sidebar, and the video list is the one you approved. It uses yt-dlp for search and metadata, so it needs no YouTube API key, and all data is a single SQLite database.

How does approval work?

How does my child sign in?

With the Kids access PIN shown in the installation credentials. Anyone with the URL and the PIN can search YouTube through the server and send you requests, but nothing plays until you approve it, so keep the PIN private.

Do I need a Telegram bot?

Yes. Create one with @BotFather and enter its token and your numeric chat ID during install. Open the bot in Telegram and press Start first, otherwise it cannot message you.

Does my child need a YouTube account?

No. Upstream notes that no YouTube account is needed, and BrainRotGuard uses yt-dlp for search and metadata rather than a YouTube API key.

What runs alongside BrainRotGuard?

Nothing else: it is a single container. Only the kids' web interface is published, through xCloud-managed HTTPS.

What does the server need to reach?

Can I change the PIN later?

Not by editing the environment. The PIN is only applied when the default profile is first created, so manage later PIN changes and profiles from the Telegram bot.

What should I back up?

The brg_db volume, which holds the database with approvals, profiles and settings. Keep the PIN private.

What survives a restart?

Data on the brg_db volume — the approved video library was still listed after a container restart in QA, because it is a persistent named volume.

Does xCloud automatically back up or update BrainRotGuard?

No. The template pins BrainRotGuard 1.33.0 by immutable digest, and the app only sends an update notice to you in Telegram; it does not update itself. Back up first, read the upstream release notes, then bump the readable tag and digest together on your own schedule. Server-level backups and snapshots are available on every Cloud VPS.

What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?

The template's baseline asks for 1 CPU core, 512 MB of RAM and 2 GB of disk; measured idle use in QA was about 98 MiB. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung, with real headroom above that baseline.

Is xCloud officially partnered with BrainRotGuard?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the BrainRotGuard project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source BrainRotGuard project.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
