What is Livebook?

Livebook is a web application for writing interactive and collaborative code notebooks, released under the Apache-2.0 licence. Upstream lists Markdown and Elixir code cells, a rich editor, interactive results through Kino including charts and tables, Smart cells that automate common tasks, reproducible package management, multiple users on one notebook and notebooks saved as .livemd files. A self-hosted Livebook is an alternative to a hosted notebook service such as Google Colab for teams that want their code and data on their own server.

On xCloud the template runs the official ghcr.io/livebook-dev/livebook 0.19.9 image, pinned by digest, as one container with a single volume, livebook_data, at /data. One shared password protects the whole instance, so there are no individual accounts. Livebook executes arbitrary Elixir code from any notebook opened in it, which makes access control a real consideration.

Can you self-host Livebook with Docker?

Yes. For Livebook Docker hosting the template runs the official ghcr.io/livebook-dev/livebook 0.19.9 image, pinned by digest, as a single container. Configuration and notebooks live under /data on one volume, and xCloud's nginx publishes it over HTTPS with proxy headers configured for the reverse proxy.

Is Livebook free and open source?

Livebook is open source under the Apache-2.0 licence, so the notebook server has no licence fee. What you pay xCloud is the server and the deployment. Data sources or APIs your notebooks call may have their own charges, separate from the server.

How much RAM does Livebook need?

The manifest asks for 2048 MB of RAM, two CPU cores and 5 GB of disk. Notebook code runs on this server, so heavier data work needs more. The 6 GB plan sold here gives about three times the floor, which matters when several notebooks evaluate at once.

How do I sign in to Livebook?

Open your HTTPS address and enter the Livebook password you chose, or the generated one on your credentials panel. It is a single shared password for the whole instance, not a username and password pair, and token authentication is switched off. Keep the secret key base stable across restores.

Is it safe to share Livebook with other people?

Only with people you trust with code execution on the server. Livebook runs arbitrary Elixir from any notebook opened in it, and one shared password gates everyone equally. There are no per-user accounts or permissions, so treat the password like shell access.

How do I back up Livebook?

Back up the livebook_data volume, mounted at /data, which holds Livebook's configuration and the notebooks saved under it. Save notebooks there so they survive a restart. Keep LIVEBOOK_SECRET_KEY_BASE stable when restoring the same data, or existing sessions and secrets are invalidated.

How do I upgrade Livebook?

Version 0.19.9 is fixed by digest, so a catalog update reaches new installs only. Back up livebook_data, read the upstream release notes, then adopt a newer template version when you decide. Test a notebook that uses your packages afterwards, since dependencies can change between releases.

Can several people edit one Livebook notebook?

Yes. Upstream says multiple users can work on the same notebook at once with no additional setup. On this install they all sign in with the same shared password, so there are no individual identities, and every collaborator can run code on the server.

Can I run Livebook in the cloud on xCloud?

Yes. Livebook cloud use gives the notebook server a dedicated Cloud VPS with your domain and certificate. A server rented elsewhere can be enrolled as self-managed instead and run the same template there. Restrict who can reach the address, because the password is the only gate.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
