What is Next Image Transformation?

Next Image Transformation is an open-source HTTP API from coollabsio that resizes, crops and changes the quality of remote images on demand. It exposes a Next.js-style /image/ route and hands the work to imgproxy, so a Next.js site, or any other client, can request small AVIF or WebP images without running its own image pipeline.

On xCloud it runs as the API container plus a private imgproxy container, behind HTTPS, with the source hostnames you allow set at install time.

AVIF And WebP Output
JPEG sources come back as AVIF, or WebP when AVIF is unavailable, regardless of the client Accept header. In QA a 128 KB JPEG returned as a roughly 14 KB AVIF at width 300.
imgproxy Backend
Transformations run in imgproxy v3.31.4, the open-source edition rather than Pro, on a private network next to the API with no host port of its own.
Hostname Allowlist
Only the source hostnames you list in ALLOWED_REMOTE_DOMAINS are fetched. In verification, other hosts, look-alike hostnames, localhost, cloud metadata addresses and file URLs were refused with 403.
Health Endpoint
An unauthenticated /health route is available for uptime monitoring, and the root URL shows a service banner.
Light And Stateless
Both containers used about 34 MiB while idle on QA, and with no volumes there is nothing to lose on a restart.

How do I restrict which images it can fetch?

Enter the allowed source hostnames at install time, comma-separated, such as example.com,cdn.example.com or *.example.com. Only those hosts are fetched; everything else gets a 403. Avoid * unless you intend to proxy images from any public host.

Which format do I get back?

JPEG sources are returned as AVIF, or WebP when AVIF is unavailable, whatever the browser's Accept header says. Confirm the Content-Type in your loader before relying on it.

Does it need a login or API key?

No. There is no login, and the allowlist is the only access control, so keep it narrow. A wide allowlist can turn your install into an open image proxy.

How do I request a resized image?

Call https://your-domain/image/ followed by the full source image URL, with width, height and quality query parameters, for example ?width=800&height=600&quality=75. The /health route is open for monitoring.

What runs alongside Next Image Transformation?

An imgproxy v3.31.4 container, private to the install with no host port. The API on port 3000 is the only service published through xCloud's HTTPS.

What error behaviour should I expect?

This is upstream behaviour: an invalid width or quality returns HTTP 200 with a text/plain "Invalid URL", and a malformed /image/ URL returns HTTP 500 while the service keeps running. Validate parameters in your loader.

Can I change the allowed hostnames later?

Yes. Edit ALLOWED_REMOTE_DOMAINS in the Environment editor and restart both containers; the value is re-read on restart.

What should I back up?

Nothing is stored, because the template has no volumes. Keep a copy of your ALLOWED_REMOTE_DOMAINS value, and use xCloud's server backups and snapshots for the server itself.

Does xCloud automatically back up or update Next Image Transformation?

No. The template pins Next Image Transformation 0.0.3 and imgproxy v3.31.4 by immutable digest; existing sites are not upgraded automatically. To update, read both projects' release notes and bump the readable tags and digests together. Do not move imgproxy to v4: app 0.0.3 requests a URL format that v4 rejects.

What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?

The template's baseline asks for 1 CPU core, 256 MB of RAM and 2 GB of disk; both containers used about 34 MiB while idle in QA. Decoding large images or running many transforms at once needs more memory, which is why this page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung.

Is xCloud officially partnered with Next Image Transformation?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Next Image Transformation or imgproxy projects has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source software, licensed under Apache-2.0.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
