How much RAM does Node-RED need?

The template manifest asks for 1024 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 4 GB of disk as a floor for Node-RED alone. The 6 GB tier sold here leaves room for concurrent flows, larger messages and any palette nodes you install.

Is Node-RED free and open source?

Yes. Node-RED is open source under the Apache License 2.0, per the LICENSE file at the 5.0.7 tag, and the code costs nothing to run. xCloud bills for the dedicated Cloud VPS and the deployment; your flows and credentials stay in your own volume.

How do I run Node-RED in Docker?

This is Node-RED Docker hosting prepared for you: the template runs the official nodered/node-red 5.0.7 image as one container, pinned by immutable digest, with node_red_data mounted at /data and HTTPS in front. It writes the administrator login into settings.js before provisioning finishes.

Where does Node-RED store flows?

On the node_red_data volume mounted at /data. That single volume holds settings.js, your flows, encrypted flow credentials, projects, installed palette nodes and libraries, so one copy of it captures the whole workspace. Context data is a separate matter and is memory-only by default.

How do I back up Node-RED?

Take a backup of the complete node_red_data volume as one unit, never of single files. It includes the credentialSecret in settings.js, which is needed to decrypt stored flow credentials, so restoring flows without that file leaves the credentials unreadable. Verify a restore before relying on it.

How do I upgrade Node-RED in Docker?

Nothing upgrades it for you. The image is pinned at 5.0.7 by immutable digest. Review the upstream release notes, confirm a full /data backup, pin the new tag and digest, recreate the container without deleting volumes, then check login, deployed flows and credentials still work.

Is the Node-RED editor protected by a password?

Yes. You choose the administrator username at install (default admin) and accept a generated 32-character password or enter your own; the credentials appear in your panel. A post-install check waits until the Admin API actually answers 401 before provisioning is declared finished.

Can I install extra nodes in Node-RED?

Yes, from the Node-RED palette, and they persist on the data volume. They run as trusted application code with their own licences and update cadence, and xCloud does not vet or sandbox them, so review any third-party node before you install it.

Are the HTTP endpoints my flows publish protected by the same login?

No. The generated login gates only the editor and Admin API. HTTP In nodes that you build are a separate surface and can be public; enable Node-RED's own httpNodeAuth setting in settings.js if every flow endpoint should require authentication.

What survives a restart?

Everything on node_red_data survives: flows, credentials, projects and installed nodes. Node-RED's context storage is memory-only by default in this template, so flows that need context to persist across restarts need a filesystem context store configured in settings.js.

Is this Node-RED cloud hosting?

It is your own Node-RED on a dedicated Cloud VPS that xCloud provisions, not a shared flow service. The container, the node_red_data volume and the administrator account belong to your install, and the editor is served over HTTPS on your domain.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
