What is Node-RED?

Node-RED is an open-source, low-code visual programming environment for event-driven applications, integrations, APIs, automation, and connected-device workflows, built around a browser-based flow editor. This template deploys Node-RED version 5.0.6.

Is Node-RED free?

Yes — Node-RED is free and open source under the Apache License 2.0. What you pay xCloud for is the dedicated server it runs on and the management around it, not the software itself.

Can I self-host Node-RED?

Yes — that is exactly what this template deploys. It brings up the official Node-RED image, pinned by immutable digest, writes native administrator authentication before provisioning finishes, mounts a persistent data volume, and publishes it over HTTPS on your domain in minutes instead of assembled by hand.

Who becomes the administrator, and how do I sign in?

You choose the administrator username during installation (default "admin") and either accept a generated 32-character password or enter your own compliant value. Both are shown once in your xCloud Credentials panel alongside the Node-RED URL — open that URL and sign in with them.

What does xCloud configure automatically?

The administrator account, a native bcrypt-backed adminAuth configuration and a stable flow-credential encryption secret written into settings.js, the domain, and the HTTPS route. A post-install check polls the Admin API until it actually enforces that login before the install is marked complete.

Are the HTTP endpoints my flows publish protected by that same login?

No. The generated administrator login gates only the editor and Admin API. Customer-created HTTP In nodes are a separate surface and can be public by default — enable Node-RED's own httpNodeAuth setting in settings.js if every HTTP flow endpoint should require authentication.

Should I review third-party palette nodes before installing them?

Yes. Palette nodes run as trusted application code inside your Node-RED instance and carry their own licenses and update cadence — xCloud does not vet, sandbox, or review them for you.

What should I back up?

The complete node_red_data volume mounted at /data, as one unit. It holds settings, flows, encrypted flow credentials, projects, installed palette nodes, and libraries — including the credentialSecret in settings.js, which is required to decrypt stored flow credentials and must be preserved across restart, redeploy, update, and restore.

Backups in xCloud

Does xCloud automatically back up or update Node-RED?

No. The template pins the Node-RED image by immutable digest; a catalog re-sync affects new installations only. Review upstream release notes, verify a complete /data backup, pin the new tag and digest, recreate without deleting volumes, and verify login, deployed flows, credentials, and representative executions after any update.

What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?

The template manifest asks for 1 GB of RAM, one CPU core and 4 GB of disk as a floor for Node-RED alone. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung, with real headroom above that floor for concurrent flows, larger messages, and installed palette nodes.

What survives a restart?

Everything on node_red_data, because it is a persistent named volume — flows, credentials, projects, and installed nodes all survive. Node-RED's own message-flow context is memory-only by default in this template; a flow that needs context to survive restarts requires configuring a localfilesystem context store in settings.js, which is then also covered by backing up the same volume.

Is xCloud officially partnered with Node-RED?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Node-RED project (OpenJS Foundation) has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Node-RED project.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
