Openinary Hosting Live In 5 Minutes

Deploy Openinary on xCloud and get Openinary hosting for a self-hosted media processing service on your own domain. xCloud runs the pinned official image as a single container, creates the administrator from your install email and a generated password, mounts persistent volumes for the database, uploads and transform cache, and publishes it over HTTPS in minutes, with no separate database to manage.

What is Openinary?

Openinary is a self-hosted media processing platform, a self-hosted Openinary being an open-source alternative to a hosted service such as Cloudinary. You upload images and videos, then request resized, cropped or converted versions through URL parameters; Openinary transforms them on the fly and caches the result. Upstream lists a REST API with URL-based transformations, S3-compatible storage support, WebP and AVIF output and an admin dashboard, and notes it is under active development.

On xCloud the install runs Openinary v0.5.0 from the official image, pinned by immutable digest, as one container with SQLite built in. It keeps the database, uploaded originals and transform cache on three named volumes, generates the administrator password and signing secrets, and serves everything over HTTPS on your domain. This template uses local volumes rather than S3 storage, and delivery URLs are public.

From Sign-Up to Your First Transformed Image In Just 3 Easy Steps

A self-hosted media service normally means a container, a database, a signing secret, persistent storage, a domain and a certificate before the first resize. This is the same result without assembling any of it.

  1. Step 01

Create your xCloud account and pick Openinary from the OneClick catalog. Choose your domain and target server, then enter the administrator email — that is the only field.

  2. Step 02

    We Deploy It For You

One click. We bring up the official Openinary image, pinned by immutable digest, as a single container with SQLite built in, mount the openinary_data, openinary_public and openinary_cache volumes, generate the administrator password and signing secrets, and publish it over HTTPS on your domain.

  3. Step 03

    Upload And Transform

Open your HTTPS Openinary URL and sign in with the administrator email and the password from the protected installation credentials. Upload your first image, then request a resized or converted version from its /t/ URL.

Everything Openinary Does, On Your Own Server

Openinary runs in full here: URL-based image and video transformations, an authenticated upload API and a dashboard, on storage you own.

  • Image Transformations Via URL

Resize, crop and convert images by adding parameters to the URL, such as width, height and output format, for example w_800,h_600 or f_avif.

  • Video Transformations

Resize and compress videos, extract a thumbnail frame or cut a clip with start and end offsets, using the same URL style as images.

  • Modern Formats And Caching

Upstream lists WebP, AVIF and modern codecs, with automatic caching of results; the cache lives on its own volume and rebuilds on demand.

  • Admin Dashboard And REST API

Manage assets from the dashboard, create API keys for your applications and upload through the authenticated API.

  • Single Container, SQLite Inside

One container serves the dashboard, API and delivery; the database is SQLite, so there is no separate database service to run.

  • Administrator Created At First Start

The one administrator is created from your install email and a generated password, and sign-up is closed once that account exists.

Everything You Need To Run Your Media Service 24/7

Managed hosting for Openinary, so the parts that keep it online are not your problem.

  • Openinary v0.5.0 deployed instantly
  • Official image pinned by digest
  • Admin password and secrets generated for you
  • Kept behind xCloud nginx
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Server backups and snapshots
  • Server security updates included
  • 30+ server locations
  • Unused balance refunded

What You Can Do With Openinary

  • Serve right-sized images to your site or app

Request each image at the width, height and format a page needs from one uploaded original, instead of exporting and storing every variant by hand.

  • Convert to modern formats

Deliver WebP or AVIF versions of existing JPEG and PNG uploads by changing a URL parameter, without re-processing a library.

  • Generate video thumbnails and previews

Pull a thumbnail frame, a lower-quality preview or a short clip from an uploaded video with URL parameters.

  • Keep media processing on your own server

Run transformations and storage on a server you control, with an administrator-only dashboard and API for uploads and API keys.

Openinary vs Alternatives

Cloudinary
Cloudinary is a hosted media SaaS. As a Cloudinary alternative, Openinary offers URL-based image and video transformations but runs on your own server and storage.
imgproxy
In an Openinary vs imgproxy comparison, imgproxy is a self-hosted service for on-demand image resizing and conversion with signed URLs; Openinary also transforms video and adds a dashboard and upload API.
Thumbor
An on-demand image processing service that accepts signed transformation URLs; Openinary adds video transformations and an admin dashboard.
Imagor
An image processing server built on libvips that adopts the Thumbor URL syntax; Openinary adds video transformations and an admin dashboard with API keys.

Hear what people are saying about us

See why agencies, developers, startups, and growing businesses choose xCloud to power their projects.

xCloud works really well, I am surprised by its performance being this the release version, I have tried many paid platforms such as runcloud, cloudpages or serveravatar, as well as free platforms such as CyberPanel, CloudPanel or Hestia Control Panel and direct competitors such as SpinupWP and FlyWP. Of all those that I have tried, the platform that works best for WordPress is SpinupWP and I believe that xCloud can reach and surpass that development, its roadmap is promising. Congratulations to the xCloud team, I hope they become the leading platform in the segment, it has all the potential to achieve it!
Brian Geovanny
I've been with runcloud for the last 3 years. However, after trying xcloud for the last month, I'm switching over. They are on a roll with their setup.
Kevin Pineda
I'm moving my servers to xCloud, a cloud control panel by M Asif Rahman and the WPDeveloper team. Their roadmap looks interesting and no, there are no team mates nor API limits with xCloud! #xCloud #wordpress #hosting

xCloud is like having an expert server team on call — without the big agency costs. It's given me back my time and given my clients peace of mind. Highly recommended for freelancers and small teams who want reliable performance and security.

xCloud isn't just a solution. It's like one of that friend who got your back when you screw things up pretty bad.

Trust me when I say, once people explore the potential of xCloud they gonna switch from other panels, just keep delivering the best tech, lots of love for the team 😍😍

So far my experience has been smooth like silk. I didn't imagine that configuring and managing a VPS would be so easy. As of today, I have deployed 8 sites. The support is good, and they treat users with respect, even if they ask stupid questions (myself included). For the future, I hope for greater flexibility in scheduled backups and more comprehensive and consistent documentation. I'm sure that within a few months, xCloud will become the leader in its segment. This community is amazing, and the Staff here is super helpful.

Came from cloudways then to runcloud then to xcloud. Looks like I'm staying here.
Gerson El
I've recently taken all of my Vultr-hosted sites and gotten rid of cPanel for them to substitute it with xCloud. I have to say, I'm really impressed with xCloud so far! The interface is definitely the standout feature for me.
Tony Lewis
I came from Cloudways and won't go back. Highly impressed with xCloud. Glad I gave them a chance.
Jared McDowell
I like xCloud better than RunCloud, but one thing I'll point out is that some years ago RunCloud was hungry for business, the support was outstanding, and the community was active and helped each other. Maybe it was sold, there was a change in management, or they stopped being hungry, but the quality of the RunCloud offering declined and it hasn't been moving forward quickly. My point is that currently the xCloud team has the edge and it is theirs to keep or lose

Dear xCloud Team, I have been using xCloud for some time now and am genuinely impressed with its capabilities and the flexibility it offers by allowing users to bring their own VPS for management. It's a fantastic service, and my experience so far has been very positive. Successful migrated 5 sites on a single server. Xcloud migration tool worked great. There were few hiccups with security plugin like MalCare but disabling the plugin prior to migration worked just fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

Can you self-host Openinary with Docker?

Yes, and this template is Openinary Docker hosting without the setup: one official container pinned by digest, SQLite inside it, three named volumes, a generated administrator password and signing secrets, and HTTPS on your own domain, all provisioned from the OneClick catalog.

How much RAM does Openinary need?

The template asks for 1024 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 5 GB of disk; measured idle use in QA was about 150 MiB. Upstream recommends 2 GB or more for video work, so the 6 GB plan is the entry rung here, with headroom for ffmpeg transcodes.

How do I request a resized image from Openinary?

Upload a file, then request it from a /t/ URL with parameters such as width, height and output format, for example /t/w_800,h_600/image.jpg. Adding f_avif converts the same original to AVIF, and the result is cached on the openinary_cache volume.

Does Openinary transform videos as well as images?

Yes. Upstream documents the same /t/ URL style for video: resize or compress a file, pull a thumbnail frame with a start offset, or cut a clip with start and end offsets. Video work is heavier than image work, so choose the larger plan for busy sites.

Is Openinary a Cloudinary alternative?

Upstream positions it as an open-source, self-hosted media processing platform with URL-based transformations, which covers part of what Cloudinary offers. The difference here is that the server, uploads and cache sit on your own Cloud VPS volumes rather than in a hosted account.

Are Openinary media files private?

No. Delivery URLs are public to anyone who knows or guesses the path of an uploaded file, and transformations of it can be requested without signing in. Only the dashboard and management API need the single administrator login, so do not upload files that must stay private.

What should I back up on an Openinary server?

Back up openinary_data, which holds the SQLite database, and openinary_public, which holds uploaded originals, plus the stable values in the site's .env file. The openinary_cache volume rebuilds on demand and can be left out of copies. Test a restore before you rely on it.

How do I upgrade Openinary?

The install stays on its pinned v0.5.0 image until you adopt a newer template version. Back up openinary_data and openinary_public first and read the upstream release notes, since upstream warns of possible breaking changes before v1.0.0. Never change BETTER_AUTH_SECRET, or Openinary will not boot.

Is Openinary free?

Yes. Openinary is open source under the AGPL-3.0 licence. Running it costs only the dedicated Cloud VPS under it. If you modify it and let other people use that version over a network, AGPL terms apply, so keep your changes available to those users.

Is xCloud the same as Openinary Cloud?

No. Upstream sells its own hosted Openinary Cloud. This page is different: xCloud provisions a Cloud VPS and deploys the open-source Openinary container on it, so the files, database and administrator account live on a server you own and control.

Is there an upload size limit?

Yes. Uploads are limited to 90 MB per file by the template. If the site is proxied through Cloudflare, its own request limit of about 100 MB also applies, so very large videos should be shortened or compressed before they are uploaded.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
