What is PeerTube?

Self-hosted PeerTube is a free, decentralized and federated video platform that upstream describes as an alternative to platforms that centralize data and attention, such as YouTube, Dailymotion or Vimeo. It joins a network of multiple small, interoperable video hosting providers, where you can follow creators and publish videos with no vendor lock-in, on a platform that is community-owned and ad-free. The code is licensed AGPL-3.0, and the project is developed by Framasoft.

On xCloud the template runs PeerTube v8.2.4 from the chocobozzz/peertube image, pinned by digest, with a private PostgreSQL 17 and Redis 8. Four named volumes hold configuration, media, the database and Redis. The root administrator is created with a generated password, public registration is off, and live-stream ingress and email are not set up.

Can I run my own PeerTube instance?

Yes. This template deploys one on a dedicated Cloud VPS: the PeerTube v8.2.4 image, private PostgreSQL 17 and Redis 8, and four volumes behind HTTPS on your domain. You sign in as root with the generated password, then set the instance name, moderation and federation settings.

What does federation mean on PeerTube?

Upstream describes PeerTube as federated and interoperable: many small video providers form one network, so people on one instance can follow creators on another. Review your federation, moderation and registration settings before inviting users, because they decide how your instance interacts with others.

Can you self-host PeerTube with Docker?

Yes, and upstream documents a Docker install. This template does it for you: the chocobozzz/peertube image, PostgreSQL and Redis pinned by digest, with xCloud's HTTPS in place of the upstream nginx and Certbot. It is PeerTube Docker hosting without writing the compose file.

How much RAM does a PeerTube cloud server need?

Plan on 4096 MB of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 20 GB of disk as the template floor, which is why the 16 GB Cloud VPS is the plan sold here for a PeerTube cloud site. Treat that as light use: upstream recommends 8 GB and 8 cores when transcoding on the same machine.

How much storage does PeerTube need?

The manifest sets a 20 GB disk floor, but storage grows with your source videos, the extra resolutions PeerTube generates, previews and how long you keep them. Watch disk use, set upload quotas, and add disk before you open uploads more widely.

Does PeerTube support live streaming?

Upstream PeerTube does, but this template's baseline omits RTMP live-stream ingress entirely, so live streaming is not set up here. Add it only after you have separately secured the raw port and firewall boundary it needs; xCloud does not open it for you.

How do I back up PeerTube?

Take one backup of peertube_config, peertube_data, peertube_postgres_data and peertube_redis_data together. Pause uploads and background processing before filesystem snapshots, prefer PostgreSQL-native backups on a busy site, and test a restore in an isolated install before you rely on it. Keep the generated PeerTube secret with the copy.

How do I upgrade PeerTube?

Upgrades are deliberate. The images are pinned by digest and a catalogue re-sync affects new installs only. Read the upstream release and migration notes, back up all four volumes, test on a restored copy, then choose a later template version. Database migrations can make rollback unsafe without that backup.

Is PeerTube open source?

Yes. The PeerTube code is licensed AGPL-3.0, so the software itself is free to run, and there is no licence charge on xCloud. Your cost is the dedicated Cloud VPS. If you deploy modifications you must preserve notices and offer the source, as the AGPL requires.

How large a video can I upload to PeerTube?

Requests through the public site are capped at 100 MB, so the template sets PeerTube's resumable browser-upload chunks to 90 MB, letting larger videos span several requests. Any other single request above the proxy limit is rejected with an HTTP 413 error.

Does PeerTube send email on this template?

Not out of the box. SMTP points at an unauthenticated localhost relay, so mail does not deliver. Configure an authenticated external SMTP server in the Environment editor before relying on password resets or notifications. Registration is off by default, so only the admin creates accounts.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
