What is PhotoPrism?

Self-hosted PhotoPrism is an AI-powered, privacy-first app for browsing, organizing and sharing photos and videos. Upstream says it helps tag, search and rediscover media, automatically labels pictures by content and location, recognizes faces, and works as an installable app in the browser on phones, tablets and desktops. It is a self-hosted alternative to Google Photos, and the Community Edition is distributed under the GNU AGPL.

On xCloud the template runs the 260728-ce Community Edition image, pinned by digest, with a private MariaDB 12.3 database; the standard image under the Plus License is not what it deploys. Three named volumes hold originals, storage and the database. An admin account is created for you with a generated password, and public mode is off.

Is PhotoPrism free?

This template runs the Community Edition image, distributed under the GNU AGPL, so there is no licence fee for it. The standard image uses PhotoPrism's Plus License and is not what this template deploys. Your cost is the dedicated Cloud VPS, and Plus or Pro features are not included.

Can I run PhotoPrism with Docker?

Yes, and upstream installs it through Docker. This template does it for you: the photoprism 260728-ce image and a private MariaDB 12.3 container, both pinned by digest, with three named volumes behind HTTPS. It is PhotoPrism Docker hosting without writing the compose file.

How much RAM does a PhotoPrism cloud server need?

The template floor is 4096 MB of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 20 GB of disk, so a PhotoPrism cloud library is sold on the 16 GB Cloud VPS. Indexing and AI labelling are the heavy work, and big libraries need more disk for the originals.

Does PhotoPrism recognize faces?

Yes. Upstream says PhotoPrism automatically labels pictures based on content and location and recognizes the faces of your family and friends. Indexing runs on your own server, so a large library takes time and memory the first time it is scanned.

Can I back up my phone photos to PhotoPrism?

Upstream says compatible apps such as PhotoSync can back up iOS and Android phones in the background, and WebDAV clients can connect directly. On xCloud every request through the public domain is capped at 100 MB, so very large videos need another route.

Does PhotoPrism support RAW photos and videos?

Upstream says you can browse pictures without worrying about RAW images or video formats, and Live Photos start playing on hover. On this template a file over 100 MB cannot pass through the public site, so copy such originals into the originals volume from the server.

How do I back up PhotoPrism?

Take one backup of photoprism_originals, photoprism_storage and photoprism_database together. The storage volume holds the index, cache and configuration but is not a substitute for the originals, which are the primary archive. Test a restore before you rely on it.

How do I update PhotoPrism?

Nothing upgrades PhotoPrism by itself: the container is pinned to photoprism/photoprism:260728-ce by digest, so existing installs stay on that version until you adopt a newer template version. Back up the photoprism_originals, photoprism_storage and photoprism_database volumes first, then check login and a search after moving.

Can I change the database password later?

Not by editing it in the Environment editor alone. MariaDB reads DB_PASSWORD only on its first boot, while PhotoPrism reads its copy on every start, so an edit breaks the connection. Run ALTER USER inside the MariaDB container first, then update the value to match.

How do I sign in to a new PhotoPrism library?

Open your HTTPS URL and sign in as admin with the generated password in your credentials panel. Password authentication is on and public mode is off, so nobody can browse without logging in. Set the timezone on the install form, which defaults to UTC.

What is the upload limit on the public site?

Every request through the public HTTPS domain, including the WebDAV endpoint, is capped at 100 MB. A RAW original or a long 4K video above that cannot be transferred through the site, so copy it into the originals volume through server access instead.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
