What is Photoview?

Is Photoview free?
Yes — Photoview is free and open source under the GNU AGPL-3.0 License. What you pay xCloud for is the dedicated server it runs on and the management around it, not the software itself.
Can I self-host Photoview?
Yes — that is exactly what this template deploys. It brings up the official Photoview image, pinned by immutable digest, alongside a private MariaDB database, mounts persistent storage, and publishes it over HTTPS on your domain in minutes instead of assembled by hand.
Who becomes the administrator, and how do I sign in?
There is no generated administrator account shown by xCloud. Open the generated HTTPS URL after deployment and create the first administrator directly inside Photoview, using /photos as the media path — that account is yours to create, not something xCloud displays in a Credentials panel.
What does xCloud configure automatically?
The pinned Photoview image, a private MariaDB database on the internal Compose network, persistent storage for originals, cache and metadata, the domain and the HTTPS route. Only Photoview's HTTP service is published — MariaDB is never exposed to the internet.
Can Photoview modify my original photos and videos?
No. The photo-library volume is mounted read-only inside Photoview, so scanning, thumbnailing and browsing can never change or delete your original files.
How do I get my photos and videos into Photoview?
Copy your media into the photoview_photos volume through an operationally controlled server workflow, then open Settings inside Photoview and run Scan All to build the timeline and album thumbnails.
What should I back up?
Three volumes together, as one installation boundary: photoview_photos (your originals — the primary archive), photoview_cache (generated thumbnails and cache) and photoview_database (users, albums, shares and indexed metadata). Back them up together from a consistent stopped state or snapshot so they stay in sync.
Does xCloud automatically back up or update Photoview?
No. The template pins Photoview by immutable digest; a catalog re-sync affects new installations only. Review upstream and MariaDB release notes, take a complete backup of all three volumes, and verify sign-in, scanning, timeline browsing and thumbnail rendering before changing the pinned image.
What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?
This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung, with real headroom for MariaDB, thumbnail generation and a growing media library above the template's own baseline requirements.
What survives a restart?
Everything on photoview_photos, photoview_cache and photoview_database, because each is a persistent named volume. Restarting the container does not touch your originals, generated thumbnails, users, albums, shares or indexed metadata.
Is MariaDB reachable from the internet?
No. MariaDB is isolated on the private Compose network — only Photoview's own localhost-bound HTTP service is routed through xCloud's HTTPS reverse proxy.
Is xCloud officially partnered with Photoview?
No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Photoview project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Photoview project.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
