What is Picsur?

Picsur is a self-hosted image sharing service. Upstream calls it a hybrid between Imgur and Pastebin, built because its author could not find an open source project for easily hosting images, and notes that it is still in beta. It supports uploads, user accounts and roles, expiring images, EXIF stripping, conversion and editing, and formats from JPG and PNG to animated WEBP and GIF. Self-hosted Picsur is released under AGPL-3.0.

Can you self-host Picsur with Docker?

Yes, upstream ships a container image, and this template is Picsur Docker hosting wired up for you: the 0.5.6 image and PostgreSQL 16.10 pinned by digest, one picsur_postgres volume, generated secrets and HTTPS. It is your own Picsur cloud image host on a dedicated server.

How much RAM does Picsur need?

The template declares 1024 MB RAM, 1 vCPU and 10 GB disk for Picsur and PostgreSQL together. This page starts at the 6 GB plan. Because images live in the database, disk use grows with every upload you keep.

Is Picsur free?

Yes, AGPL-3.0 means no licence fee for the software. What you pay for is the dedicated Cloud VPS, cancellable any time. Upstream notes the project is still in beta, so try it on a small set of images before you depend on it for anything important.

Is Picsur an alternative to Imgur?

Upstream lists QOI, JPG, PNG, WEBP including animated, TIFF, BMP and GIF including animated. It can convert between formats and edit by resizing, rotating, flipping, stripping transparency and applying negative or greyscale effects, and it can strip EXIF data.

How do I back up Picsur?

Back up the picsur_postgres volume as one consistent unit: it holds both application data and the uploaded images, since Picsur stores images in PostgreSQL. Use a PostgreSQL-consistent method or quiesce writes first, keep the JWT and database secrets, and test a restore.

The install stays on pinned 0.5.6 and PostgreSQL 16.10 until you adopt a newer template version. Back up picsur_postgres, go through upstream's release notes, then redeploy and check sign-in, an upload and link rendering. Nothing upgrades automatically.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
