What is Zipline?

Zipline is a next-generation ShareX and file upload server, released under the MIT licence. Upstream lists uploads of any file, folders, tags, URL shortening, embeds, Discord and HTTP webhooks, OAuth2, 2FA, passkeys, password protection, image compression, video thumbnails, an API, invites, quotas and custom themes. Self-hosted Zipline is the option for people who would otherwise share files and screenshots through a hosted service such as WeTransfer or Imgur.

On xCloud the template runs ghcr.io/diced/zipline 4.6.5 beside a private PostgreSQL 15.14 container with no published port, both pinned by digest. Four volumes hold the database, uploads, public assets and themes. No administrator is pre-generated: you create the first local account at first sign-in, then set FEATURES_USER_REGISTRATION to false and restart, or public sign-up stays open.

What is Zipline used for?

Zipline is used to host your own file uploads and share links. You upload screenshots, images or any file, from the dashboard or a ShareX client, and get a link to share. It also shortens URLs and organises uploads with folders and tags, all served from your own domain.

Is Zipline free and open source?

Yes. Zipline is open source under the MIT licence, so there is no licence fee for the server. The cost on xCloud is the dedicated Cloud VPS that runs Zipline and its PostgreSQL database and for the deployment around them. Storage for uploaded files comes out of the disk on that server.

Can you self-host Zipline with Docker?

Yes. For Zipline Docker hosting the template runs the official ghcr.io/diced/zipline 4.6.5 image and a private PostgreSQL 15.14 container, both pinned by digest, with four named volumes. It generates the database password and the core secret and puts HTTPS on your domain, leaving the compose file to the template.

How much RAM does Zipline need?

Zipline's manifest floor is 2048 MB of RAM, one core and 10 GB of disk, plus whatever people upload. The 6 GB Cloud VPS sold here sits above that floor. Disk is the part that grows: size it for the files you expect people to upload, since uploads are stored locally.

Does Zipline work with ShareX?

Yes. Zipline is described upstream as a ShareX and file upload server, and you configure ShareX or another supported client from the authenticated dashboard after you sign in. Point the client at your site's HTTPS address. Upstream also lists an API, so scripts can upload files too.

How do I close public registration on Zipline?

The template does not close registration for you. Create the first local account, then set FEATURES_USER_REGISTRATION=false in the Environment editor and restart the app. Until you do, anyone who finds the site can register. Upstream also lists invites, so you can add people deliberately afterwards.

How do I back up Zipline?

A Zipline backup means all four volumes as one restore set: zipline_postgresql_data holds accounts and upload metadata, zipline_uploads holds the files, zipline_public holds public assets and zipline_themes holds themes. Stop writes or use a database-aware snapshot, keep copies off-server and restore them from the same point in time.

How do I upgrade Zipline?

Zipline 4.6.5 and PostgreSQL 15.14 keep their digests, so a template change leaves your site alone. Save all four volumes together, read the upstream release and migration notes, try a disposable copy, then select a later template version that moves both images forward.

What is CORE_SECRET in Zipline?

CORE_SECRET is a generated 48-character secret the template sets for Zipline's security-sensitive state. Keep it stable: changing it can invalidate sessions and other protected application state. It lives in the Environment editor, so copy it somewhere safe with your backups and never rotate it casually.

Can I run Zipline in the cloud on xCloud?

Yes. Under Zipline cloud use, xCloud provisions a dedicated Cloud VPS and starts the app and PostgreSQL on it and attaches your domain and certificate. Uploads fill that server's disk, so size it for your files. Hardware rented elsewhere can be attached as a self-managed server.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
