What is Podsync?

Podsync is a simple, free service that turns YouTube and Vimeo channels, playlists and user videos into podcast feeds. It downloads the episodes with yt-dlp, as audio or video at the quality you choose, and serves the feeds and files over HTTP so any podcast app can subscribe. Upstream adds OPML export, episode filtering, custom artwork and cleanup of old episodes; this template exposes OPML and cleanup. A self-hosted Podsync turns YouTube channels into podcast feeds on your own domain. It is MIT licensed.

On xCloud it is Podsync 2.8.0, the official image pinned by digest, as one container with an embedded BadgerDB and no admin interface. The podsync_data volume holds downloaded episodes and generated feeds, and podsync_db holds feed and episode metadata. Configuration is written from your install values on every start, and YouTube and Vimeo feeds need their own API keys.

Open the credentials card, copy the first feed address (/feed1.xml) and add it to a podcast app. Episodes appear once the first download finishes, which can take minutes to hours depending on the channel. Use /podsync.opml to import every feed at once.

Episode Retention
Keep only the newest episodes on disk; older ones are deleted. The template keeps 10 by default, and the number is adjustable and shared by every feed.
Scheduled Updates
Each feed is checked for new episodes on a schedule, every 12 hours by default, and new downloads run in the background.
One Lightweight Container

How much RAM does Podsync need?

The template baseline is 512 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 5 GB of disk. Podsync is one container, so the 6 GB plan is ample, but downloaded episodes fill the disk, so size feeds and retention around free space.

Can you self-host Podsync with Docker?

Yes. This template covers podsync docker hosting end to end: the official image pinned by digest, podsync_data and podsync_db, a configuration file written from your install values and HTTPS, with no separate database.

Which sources can Podsync turn into podcast feeds?

Upstream lists YouTube and Vimeo channels, playlists and users; the template also accepts SoundCloud, using a /sets/ playlist URL. You enter the first feed URL at install, and add more later in the Environment editor.

Do I need an API key for Podsync?

For YouTube and Vimeo, yes. YouTube needs a Data API v3 key and Vimeo needs an access token; without one, the feed logs an error and stays empty. SoundCloud needs no key. Add keys later in the Environment editor.

Is my Podsync feed private?

Not really. Podsync has no login, and anyone who can reach the domain can open the root page, list every feed and download episodes. Marking feeds private only asks podcast directories not to index them; add Basic Auth for stronger protection.

Why does my Podsync feed have no episodes yet?

The first update downloads the feed's latest episodes in the background, which can take several minutes to hours depending on the channel and your server. An empty feed can also mean the API key is missing or wrong.

Is Podsync free?

Yes. Podsync carries the MIT licence, so there is nothing to buy for the software. The Cloud VPS is the one cost, and this Podsync cloud install is yours alone. Host only content you are allowed to redistribute.

How do I back up Podsync?

Back up podsync_data, which holds downloaded episodes and generated XML, and podsync_db, which holds feed and episode metadata. The episodes can be fetched again, so the settings and metadata matter most.

How do I upgrade Podsync?

Podsync stays on the pinned v2.8.0 image until a newer template version is adopted. Copy both volumes beforehand and check the release notes. No upgrade happens by itself, and redeploying leaves the volumes in place.

Is Podsync an alternative to the YouTube app for listening?

For audio on the go, yes. Podsync downloads a channel's episodes and publishes a podcast feed from your server, so any podcast app can play them offline. It is a feed generator, not a player.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
