What is Sharkord?

Sharkord is a lightweight, self-hosted chat platform in the style of Discord. It offers text channels, voice channels, video and screen sharing, file uploads, roles and direct messages, and runs as a single container with an embedded SQLite database.

Voice, video and screen sharing are built on a mediasoup SFU. Sharkord is open source under the MIT licence, and upstream describes it as alpha software, so releases may include breaking changes.

From Sign-Up to a Live Chat Server In Just 3 Easy Steps

A self-hosted chat server normally means a container, a volume, a domain, a certificate and a WebSocket-aware proxy before the first message. This is the same result without assembling any of it.

  1. Step 01

Create your xCloud account and pick Sharkord from the OneClick catalog. Choose your domain and target server — there are no extra fields to fill in.

  2. Step 02

    We Deploy It For You

One click. We bring up the official Sharkord image, pinned by immutable digest, as a single container with no separate database service, mount the sharkord_data volume, and publish the web app and WebSocket over HTTPS on your domain. One public UDP port for voice, video and screen share is shown on the credentials card.

  3. Step 03

    Claim Ownership

Open your HTTPS Sharkord URL and create your account. Then copy the one-time owner token from the container log, run useToken() with it in your browser's developer console, and your account becomes the owner. Open the credentials card's UDP port in your firewall for voice.

Everything Sharkord Does, On Your Own Server

Sharkord runs in full here: a Discord-style chat server on your own domain, in one container, with data you own.

  • Text Channels And Direct Messages

Organise conversation into text channels and message people directly, on a server you run.

  • Voice, Video And Screen Sharing

Voice channels with video and screen sharing, built on a mediasoup SFU. They use one public UDP port, which you open in your own firewall.

  • File Uploads Up To 2 GB

Members can upload files of up to 2 GB each by default, and the owner can adjust the limit in the server settings.

  • Roles For Your Community

Use roles to run a small community or team chat, with the owner managing the server from within the app.

  • One Container, No Extra Services

Sharkord keeps its data in an embedded SQLite database, so there is no separate database or other service to run.

  • Persistent Storage

The sharkord_data volume holds the database, configuration, uploads, logs, backups and plugins. In QA a channel and message were still present after a restart.

Everything You Need To Run Your Chat Server 24/7

Managed hosting for Sharkord, so the parts that keep it online are not your problem.

  • Sharkord v0.0.27 deployed instantly
  • Official image pinned by digest
  • Web app and WebSocket over HTTPS
  • Kept behind xCloud nginx
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Server backups and snapshots
  • Server security updates included
  • 30+ server locations
  • Unused balance refunded

What You Can Do With Sharkord

  • A private community chat

Run a Discord-style server for friends, a club or a community on your own domain, with roles to organise who can do what.

  • Team chat you control

Give a small team text channels, direct messages and file sharing on a server whose data stays on your own infrastructure.

  • Voice and screen sharing sessions

Hop into a voice channel to talk, turn on video or share a screen, once the voice UDP port is open in your firewall.

  • A lightweight self-hosted option

Run chat as one container with an embedded SQLite database and no external services — measured idle use in QA was about 79 MiB of RAM.

See why agencies, developers, startups, and growing businesses choose xCloud to power their projects.

xCloud works really well, I am surprised by its performance being this the release version, I have tried many paid platforms such as runcloud, cloudpages or serveravatar, as well as free platforms such as CyberPanel, CloudPanel or Hestia Control Panel and direct competitors such as SpinupWP and FlyWP. Of all those that I have tried, the platform that works best for WordPress is SpinupWP and I believe that xCloud can reach and surpass that development, its roadmap is promising. Congratulations to the xCloud team, I hope they become the leading platform in the segment, it has all the potential to achieve it!
Brian Geovanny
I've been with runcloud for the last 3 years. However, after trying xcloud for the last month, I'm switching over. They are on a roll with their setup.

I'm moving my servers to xCloud, a cloud control panel by M Asif Rahman and the WPDeveloper team. Their roadmap looks interesting and no, there are no team mates nor API limits with xCloud! #xCloud #wordpress #hosting

xCloud isn't just a solution. It's like one of that friend who got your back when you screw things up pretty bad.

Trust me when I say, once people explore the potential of xCloud they gonna switch from other panels, just keep delivering the best tech, lots of love for the team 😍😍

So far my experience has been smooth like silk. I didn't imagine that configuring and managing a VPS would be so easy. As of today, I have deployed 8 sites. The support is good, and they treat users with respect, even if they ask stupid questions (myself included). For the future, I hope for greater flexibility in scheduled backups and more comprehensive and consistent documentation. I'm sure that within a few months, xCloud will become the leader in its segment. This community is amazing, and the Staff here is super helpful.

Came from cloudways then to runcloud then to xcloud. Looks like I'm staying here.

I've recently taken all of my Vultr-hosted sites and gotten rid of cPanel for them to substitute it with xCloud. I have to say, I'm really impressed with xCloud so far! The interface is definitely the standout feature for me.
Tony Lewis
I came from Cloudways and won't go back. Highly impressed with xCloud. Glad I gave them a chance.
Jared McDowell
I like xCloud better than RunCloud, but one thing I'll point out is that some years ago RunCloud was hungry for business, the support was outstanding, and the community was active and helped each other. Maybe it was sold, there was a change in management, or they stopped being hungry, but the quality of the RunCloud offering declined and it hasn't been moving forward quickly. My point is that currently the xCloud team has the edge and it is theirs to keep or lose

Dear xCloud Team, I have been using xCloud for some time now and am genuinely impressed with its capabilities and the flexibility it offers by allowing users to bring their own VPS for management. It's a fantastic service, and my experience so far has been very positive. Successful migrated 5 sites on a single server. Xcloud migration tool worked great. There were few hiccups with security plugin like MalCare but disabling the plugin prior to migration worked just fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

What makes Sharkord different from other chat servers?

It is a lightweight Discord-like platform with voice, video and screen sharing built on a mediasoup SFU, running as a single container with an embedded SQLite database.

How do I sign in the first time?

Sharkord has no built-in default login. Create an account on your site, then claim ownership with the one-time token printed in the container log on first start, by running useToken() in your browser's developer console.

Does voice work out of the box?

Voice, video and screen share need the public UDP port shown on the credentials card to be open in your own firewall; xCloud does not open it for you. Text chat works regardless.

What runs alongside Sharkord?

Nothing. It is one container with an embedded SQLite database, so there is no private database service.

Is the server open to everyone by default?

Yes, until you restrict it. Anyone who can open the site can register, and new registrations stay open until the owner turns them off or sets a server password in the server settings.

How should I treat the owner token?

Like a root password. It is printed once, cannot be recovered or rotated, and is not single use, so anyone who holds it can take over the server.

How large can uploads be?

Up to 2 GB per file by default; the owner can adjust the limit in the server settings.

What should I back up?

The sharkord_data volume, which holds the database, configuration, uploads, logs, backups and plugins.

Does xCloud automatically back up or update Sharkord?

No. The template pins Sharkord v0.0.27 by immutable digest, so existing sites are not automatically upgraded. Back up first, read the upstream release notes, then bump the readable image tag and digest together on your own schedule. Sharkord is alpha software and releases may include breaking changes. Server-level backups and snapshots are available on every Cloud VPS.

What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?

The template's baseline asks for 1 CPU core, 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of disk; measured idle use in QA was about 79 MiB. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung, with real headroom above that baseline.

What survives a restart?

Data on the sharkord_data volume — in QA a channel and message were still present after a container restart, because it is a persistent named volume.

Is xCloud officially partnered with Sharkord?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Sharkord project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Sharkord project.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
