Zulip is an open-source team chat app with topic-based threading that upstream says combines the best of email and chat, designed for both live and asynchronous conversations, and released under the Apache License 2.0. Messages live in a channel and a topic, search covers every channel, and an integrations catalogue connects other tools. What is Zulip used for?

Zulip is used for team chat where every message sits in a channel and a topic. People can follow one conversation without scrolling through unrelated chatter, which suits both live discussion and catching up later. Teams use it for remote work, open-source communities and any group that works across time zones.

Is Zulip free and open source?

Yes. Zulip is open source under the Apache License 2.0, so the server has no licence fee. The only charge is for the dedicated Cloud VPS that runs the five containers and the deployment around them.

Can you self-host Zulip with Docker?

Yes. For Zulip Docker hosting the template runs the official zulip-server 12.2-0 image, pinned by digest, with PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ, Redis and Memcached on a private network and four named volumes. It generates the service passwords and secret key, creates your organisation and puts HTTPS on your domain.

How much RAM does Zulip need?

Zulip's manifest floor is 4096 MB of RAM, two cores and 20 GB of disk, because the Zulip server, PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ, Redis and Memcached share the machine. The Cloud VPS plan sold on this page leaves headroom above that floor, and uploads and message history grow the disk.

What services does Zulip need?

Besides the Zulip server itself it needs PostgreSQL for data, RabbitMQ for the queue, Memcached for caching and Redis for short-term data such as rate limiting. The template runs all four on the private Compose network, and only the Zulip HTTP port is bound to localhost and proxied over HTTPS. Their passwords are generated for you.

How do I back up Zulip?

Run the app:backup command in the Zulip container first, which writes application-generated database dumps into zulip_data. Then snapshot zulip_data, zulip_postgres, zulip_rabbitmq and zulip_redis together. A live PostgreSQL volume snapshot alone is not a consistent database backup. Keep copies off-server and test a restore on an isolated host.

How do I upgrade Zulip?

Zulip 12.2-0 keeps its digest until you act. Refresh your backups first, then follow upstream's documented Docker migration sequence before choosing a later template version. Because migrations may be one-way, going back needs the earlier images together with a compatible backup of every volume.

How do I sign in to a new Zulip server?

Open your domain and sign in with the owner email you entered on the install form and the initial password shown in your credentials. Then change that password in Personal settings, because editing it in the environment later does not rotate the account. After that, invite your team from inside Zulip.

What is the upload limit in Zulip?

File and image uploads are limited to 100 MB per file by the platform proxy, and larger attachments are rejected. That limit sits in front of Zulip, so raising Zulip's own MAX_FILE_UPLOAD_SIZE setting cannot go beyond it. Uploads are stored in the zulip_data volume with the rest of your configuration.

Can I run Zulip in the cloud on xCloud?

Yes. Under Zulip cloud use, xCloud provisions a dedicated Cloud VPS, runs the five containers on it and attaches your domain and certificate. Reserve the full 4096 MB of RAM floor for the stack. A server from another provider can be attached as a self-managed server.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
