What is Zulip?
Zulip is an open-source team chat platform organised by streams and topics for focused real-time and asynchronous collaboration. This template deploys version 12.2-0.
How do I change the owner password?
Inside Zulip under Personal settings. The initial owner password is used only when the first organisation is created; changing it in the environment does not rotate the account.
Is there an upload size limit?
Yes, 100 MB per file, set by the platform proxy. Zulip's own MAX_FILE_UPLOAD_SIZE cannot exceed it.
How do I take a consistent backup?
Run /sbin/entrypoint.sh app:backup inside the Zulip container first, then snapshot zulip_data, zulip_postgres, zulip_rabbitmq and zulip_redis together. A live PostgreSQL volume snapshot on its own is not a consistent database backup.
Why 16 GB for a chat server?
The template asks for 4 GB of RAM across Zulip, PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ, Redis and Memcached, which leaves too little room on a 6 GB box once the operating system is up.
What does xCloud configure automatically?
The pinned Zulip image, the zulip url, owner email and initial owner password shown in the credentials panel, persistent storage on zulip_data, zulip_postgres, zulip_rabbitmq and zulip_redis, the domain and the HTTPS route. Zulip stays on internal port 80, reachable only through xCloud nginx.
What should I back up?
Run app:backup inside the Zulip container first, then zulip_data (uploads, configuration, secrets and application-generated dumps) together with zulip_postgres, zulip_rabbitmq and zulip_redis. Test restoration on an isolated host.
Does xCloud automatically back up or update Zulip?
No. The template pins Zulip 12.2-0 by immutable digest; new installations use the pinned release, existing sites are not automatically upgraded. Back up first, read the upstream release notes, then update the image on your own schedule. Server-level backups and snapshots are available on every Cloud VPS.
What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 16 GB?
The template manifest asks for 2 CPU cores, 4 GiB of RAM and 20 GiB of disk as a floor for Zulip. A 4 GiB floor leaves too little room on a 6 GB box once the operating system is up, so this page sells the 16 GB tier as the entry rung.
What survives a restart?
Everything on zulip_data, zulip_postgres, zulip_rabbitmq and zulip_redis, because they are persistent named volumes. Restarting the container does not touch that data.
Is xCloud officially partnered with Zulip?
No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Zulip project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Zulip project.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
