What is sish?

sish is an open-source SSH tunnelling server. A developer runs a normal ssh -R command from their own machine, and sish makes the forwarded local web app or TCP service reachable from the internet, so it is a self-hosted alternative to services like ngrok and serveo.

Because the client is plain OpenSSH, nothing extra has to be installed on the machine that is being exposed. On xCloud the web side of sish is served over HTTPS on your site domain, while the tunnels themselves run through your own server.

A tunnel server normally means a VPS, an SSH daemon, a reverse proxy, a domain, a certificate and a password policy before the first tunnel opens. This is the same result without assembling any of it.

How is sish different from ngrok?

sish runs on your own server and domain, with no third-party tunnel service in between.

How do I sign in?

Use the generated SSH password from the protected installation credentials; the username is ignored.

Can I get a subdomain per tunnel?

Not out of the box. Web tunnels use the root domain and TCP tunnels use ports 3001-3003. Subdomains need a wildcard DNS record and a wildcard certificate that you add yourself.

How many web tunnels can I open?

One at a time. Only the -R :80: form opens the web tunnel, and a second web tunnel is refused while the first is open.

Do I need to open any ports?

Yes. The SSH port and the three TCP tunnel ports are public TCP ports on the server, and nothing opens them in your firewall for you, so open them in your own firewall.

Are my tunnelled apps protected?

No. Tunnelled apps are public: sish adds no login in front of them, and only the SSH password controls who can open tunnels. The SSH port is internet-facing with a single shared password and no login rate limiting was observed, so keep the generated password secret.

What runs alongside sish?

A tiny busybox sidecar used only for the health check; nothing else.

What should I back up?

The sish_keys volume (the SSH host key), plus sish_pubkeys if you use key authentication. Back up sish_keys to keep the same host fingerprint after moving servers.

What survives a restart?

The SSH host key, because it is stored in a persistent volume, so clients see no changed-fingerprint warning after an xCloud Restart.

Does xCloud automatically back up or update sish?

No. The template pins sish v2.24.1 by immutable digest; new installations use the pinned release and existing sites are not automatically upgraded. Read the upstream release notes, then bump the readable tag and digest together on your own schedule. Server-level backups and snapshots are available on every Cloud VPS.

What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?

The template's baseline asks for 1 CPU core, 128 MB of RAM and 1 GB of disk; measured idle use in QA was about 8 MiB. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung, with real headroom above that baseline.

Is xCloud officially partnered with sish?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the sish project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source sish project.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
