What is Slash?

Slash is an open-source, self-hosted bookmark manager and link sharing platform. A self-hosted Slash lets you organise links with tags, share them as custom shortened URLs such as s/shortcut, and share link libraries with teammates through collections. Upstream lists customisable short links, public or team-only sharing, analytics on link traffic and sources, and a browser extension. It is released under the AGPL-3.0 licence.

On xCloud the install runs Slash 0.5.3 from the official image, pinned by digest, as one container with an embedded SQLite database. The slash_data volume holds the database and application state under /var/opt/slash. There is no generated account: you create the first one through Slash's own signup screen, and should then disable further signup in Workspace settings.

Can you self-host Slash with Docker?

Yes, and this template is Slash Docker hosting without the setup. Upstream deploys with a single docker run; here xCloud runs the official yourselfhosted/slash 0.5.3 image pinned by digest, mounts slash_data at /var/opt/slash and publishes HTTPS on your domain.

How much RAM does Slash need?

The floor is 256 MB of RAM, one CPU core and 2 GB of disk. Slash is a light single-container app, so the 6 GB plan is the entry rung with large headroom, and big bookmark libraries or analytics history mainly need disk.

How do I sign in to Slash for the first time?

There is no generated account. Open your HTTPS URL after installation and create the first account yourself through Slash's own signup screen, using a strong unique password. Do this straight away, because until an account exists anyone reaching the site could create it.

Is public signup open on my Slash server?

Yes, until you turn it off. Immediately after creating your own account, open Workspace settings and disable additional signup unless you want other people to register. The post-install message says the same, so do it before sharing the URL.

Does Slash have a browser extension?

Yes. Upstream provides a browser extension for Chromium-based browsers and Firefox that lets you use your shortcuts in the search bar. It is a separate install, and you point it at your own Slash address.

Can a team share links in Slash?

Yes. Upstream lists sharing short links publicly or only with your teammates, and sharing a collection with anyone. Create the other accounts after you have disabled open signup, so only people you add can see team-only links.

What should I back up on a Slash server?

Back up the complete slash_data volume. It holds the SQLite database, slash_prod.db, and application state under /var/opt/slash, including accounts, shortcuts, tags and collections. For a consistent copy, stop writes first, and keep the backup off the server in case the disk is lost.

How do I upgrade Slash?

Slash 0.5.3 stays pinned until you move to a newer template version. Copy the full volume first and read the upstream notes for database changes. A running site never upgrades by itself, and redeploying keeps slash_data.

Is Slash open source and free?

Yes: upstream calls Slash open source and its repository carries the GNU Affero General Public License v3, so the software is free. The dedicated Cloud VPS holding your link data is what you pay for.

Is Slash a good alternative to Bitly?

For a team's own short links, yes: Slash gives custom s/ shortcuts, tags, collections and analytics on your server. It is not a marketing link platform with large-scale click reporting, so check the analytics against what you need.

Is there a Slash cloud service, and who owns the data?

Hosting Slash on xCloud means a Cloud VPS prepared for you holds the application. Your data stays yours, in an SQLite file on your own volume, and no vendor account is involved, so you decide who can sign up.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
