What is Stump?

Stump is a free and open source comics, manga and digital book server with OPDS support, written in Rust. Upstream lists OPDS 1.2 and 2.0, EPUB, PDF, CBZ and CBR support with built-in readers, annotations, OIDC authentication, multi-user permissions and Kobo and KoReader sync. A self-hosted Stump is an alternative to a commercial comic storefront or reader app such as ComiXology, released under the MIT licence, and upstream says to treat it as beta.

Who is the first Stump administrator?

You are. xCloud generates no credentials for Stump, so open the URL straight after install and create the first administrator in the first-run flow. Until that account exists, anyone who reaches the site could create it.

Which formats does Stump support?

Upstream lists EPUB, PDF, CBZ and ZIP, and CBR and RAR, with built-in readers for all of them. Add your own legally obtained files to the library volume; Stump does not supply any content, and those readers work in the browser.

Does Stump support OPDS?

Yes. Upstream supports OPDS 1.2, including OPDS PSE, and OPDS 2.0, so compatible apps can browse your library. Use your HTTPS address and a Stump account when you configure the app, and keep that account private.

Can you self-host Stump with Docker?

Yes. Stump publishes an official image, and this template is Stump Docker hosting without the setup: the 0.1.7 image pinned by digest, config and library volumes, and HTTPS on your own domain, so the library is served without hand-writing a Compose file.

How much RAM does Stump need?

The manifest floor is 1024 MB of RAM, one core and 10 GB of disk. Library size, scans, thumbnail generation and concurrent readers need more CPU, memory and disk, so size up for big collections.

Is Stump stable?

Upstream says Stump is under active development and should be treated as beta until a stable 1.0 release. It tries to avoid breaking changes and data loss but gives no guarantees, so back up both volumes before every change.

Is Stump open source?

Yes. Stump is released under the MIT licence, so the server is free to run. The only bill is the Cloud VPS, which turns this into a Stump cloud of your own rather than a hosted reading service.

Where do I put my comics?

In the stump_library volume, mounted at /data. Add a library in Stump rooted under /data, copy your files there and scan. Stump runs as user 1000, so make sure the files are readable by that user.

How do I back up Stump?

Back up stump_config and stump_library together. The config volume holds Stump's configuration and embedded database, and the library holds your books. A database backup without the matching library files is incomplete, so test a restore.

How do I upgrade Stump?

The install stays on its pinned 0.1.7 image until you adopt a newer template version. Copy both volumes, read the upstream release and migration notes, then recreate the container without deleting volumes. Nothing upgrades automatically.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
