What is Supabase?

Not as a website host. Supabase's docs say Edge Functions are designed for APIs, not web pages, and files in Storage return HTML as plain text. Its Cloud limits page allows HTML only with custom domains. So run your front end as its own site and call Supabase for data. On xCloud, it can sit on the same server.

Can Supabase host a backend?

Yes, that is its main job. One project gives you a Postgres database, sign-in, REST and GraphQL APIs, live updates and file storage. For custom server code you write Edge Functions, which you deploy yourself on a self-hosted install.

Can you self-host Supabase?

Yes. xCloud sets up all of Supabase for you on an NGINX server, generates the admin and database credentials, and publishes it over HTTPS on your domain. Supabase's own guide assumes you are comfortable with Docker, git and firewalls.

How much RAM does Supabase need to self-host?

Supabase's own self-hosting docs ask for 4 GB RAM, 2 CPU cores and 40 GB of SSD as a minimum, and recommend 8 GB or more, 4+ cores and 80 GB. We suggest the 16 GB Cloud VPS because xCloud's install runs 13 services on the server, and that leaves room for your data to grow.

What services are included in self-hosted Supabase?

xCloud's install runs 13 services: Studio, the Kong API gateway, Auth, PostgREST, Realtime, Storage, postgres-meta, Postgres 15, Edge Runtime, imgproxy, the Supavisor pooler, Logflare and Vector. Supabase's own guide now defaults to Envoy, with Kong as an option, and leaves Logflare and Vector off.

Is Supabase open source?

Yes. Supabase is open source under the Apache License 2.0, so the software costs nothing to run. Your plan pays for the server, not the platform.

Is Supabase a Firebase alternative?

Supabase says it is not a one-to-one match for Firebase. It is built on Postgres, so your data sits in SQL tables rather than a document store. Check that the features your app relies on exist before you migrate.

How do I back up self-hosted Supabase?

Back up the Postgres database and the files in Storage together, from the same point in time. xCloud's Docker backups can run on demand or on a schedule, and they can keep copies on the server or in remote storage. Supabase stops while each backup runs, so schedule backups for a quiet time.

How do I upgrade a self-hosted Supabase?

Supabase does not update itself on xCloud. Back up first and read Supabase's update instructions. xCloud does not change your database structure for you, even when you install a newer version, so you apply those changes yourself.

Do Edge Functions deploy automatically?

No. Edge Functions do not deploy automatically to a self-hosted instance; you deploy them manually to this install once it is live. xCloud also does not apply database structure changes for you, so keep those changes and your functions in your own code repository.

Can I run more than one Supabase project on the same server?

No. xCloud supports one Supabase project per server. Deploy each project on its own server.

Is this the same as Supabase Cloud?

No. It is the self-hosted stack on a dedicated Cloud VPS in your xCloud account, so it runs on a server you control, with your domain and credentials. Supabase's docs say self-hosting leaves out features such as branching, managed backups and the Management API, and that it is community-supported. We can't promise a project on Supabase Cloud will move over without changes.

What does xCloud configure automatically?

The Supabase stack, a generated admin username and password, a generated database password, API keys, the domain and the HTTPS route. Supabase always uses postgres as the database name and user. Email sign-ups are confirmed automatically. To send real confirmation emails, add your mail server in Environment and set ENABLE_EMAIL_AUTOCONFIRM to false.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
