What is Parse Server?
Parse Server is a free, open-source backend platform that provides REST and GraphQL APIs, user accounts, sessions, file storage and application objects — a self-hosted alternative to a hosted backend-as-a-service. This template deploys version 8.6.88.
Is Parse Server free?
Yes — it is free and open source under the Apache License 2.0. What you pay xCloud for is the dedicated server it runs on and the management around it, not the software itself.
Can I self-host Parse Server?
Yes — that is exactly what this template deploys. It brings up the official Parse Server image alongside a private MongoDB database, both pinned by immutable digest, generates your Application ID and Master Key, mounts the persistent MongoDB volume, and publishes the API over HTTPS on your domain in minutes instead of assembled by hand.
How do I connect a client to my Parse Server?
Copy the generated Server URL and Application ID from the installation details and configure a Parse SDK (JS, iOS, Android, Flutter, and more) or a plain REST client. Use the Server URL and the X-Parse-Application-Id header for regular client requests.
What is the Master Key, and who should use it?
The Master Key is a 64-character administrative credential generated at install time, restricted by PARSE_SERVER_MASTER_KEY_IPS to loopback and the internal Docker network. It bypasses class-level permissions and access control, so treat it like a production secret — server-side only, never in client apps, logs, screenshots or source control.
What does xCloud configure automatically?
A private MongoDB database with generated credentials, a generated Application ID and Master Key, the /parse mount path, the domain and the HTTPS route. Only Parse Server is published through xCloud-managed HTTPS — MongoDB stays private to the internal network with no host port.
Can clients create new classes automatically?
No, not by default. PARSE_SERVER_ALLOW_CLIENT_CLASS_CREATION is set to false in this template, so new Parse classes are created through the Master Key or an already-declared schema rather than implicitly by client writes.
Does this include Parse Dashboard or LiveQuery?
No. This baseline intentionally ships Parse Server and MongoDB only — no Parse Dashboard, no custom Cloud Code, and LiveQuery's real-time subscriptions are disabled (PARSE_SERVER_START_LIVE_QUERY_SERVER=false). Add those through a separately reviewed deployment design if you need them.
What should I back up?
The parse_server_mongodb_data volume, which holds every Parse object, user, session, role and file reference. Use MongoDB's supported dump/snapshot process for an application-consistent backup, restore it in an isolated environment, and confirm a test object reads back before relying on it.
Does xCloud automatically back up or update Parse Server?
No. The template pins Parse Server and MongoDB by immutable digest; a catalog re-sync affects new installations only. Review upstream Parse Server and MongoDB release notes, take a verified backup, and restore it with the same Application ID and Master Key before changing a pinned image.
What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?
The template manifest asks for 2 GB of RAM, two CPU cores and 10 GB of disk as a floor for Parse Server alongside MongoDB. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung — comfortable headroom above that floor for growing object counts, files and request volume.
What survives a restart?
Everything on parse_server_mongodb_data, because it is a persistent named volume. Restarting the containers does not touch your users, sessions, files or application objects.
Is xCloud officially partnered with the Parse Platform project?
No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Parse Platform open-source project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Parse Server project.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
