Tolgee is an open-source localization platform for software teams. Projects, languages, translation keys and translations live in one web interface and API, and Tolgee's SDKs let translators edit a string directly in the running app instead of passing .json or .po files around.

How is Tolgee different from a file-based translation workflow?

Tolgee connects to your app through SDKs, so translators can edit strings in context — even in production with the Tolgee Tools Chrome plugin — instead of passing .json or .po files around.

How do I sign in the first time?

Use the username admin and the generated password from the installation credentials, then change that password inside Tolgee. Until you do, the password from the environment is re-applied on every restart.

What runs alongside Tolgee?

A private PostgreSQL 17 database. It has no published port and is only reachable by Tolgee, whose embedded Postgres is disabled.

Can anyone sign up on my instance?

No. Public registration is off by default. You invite your team from inside Tolgee; invitation emails require SMTP.

How do I enable password-reset and invitation emails?

Email is off by default. Fill in the commented TOLGEE_SMTP_* lines in the environment file and redeploy.

What should I back up?

The tolgee_postgres_data and tolgee_data volumes together as one consistent set, plus the stable .env values (database credentials and JWT secret).

Why is the first start slow?

The first start runs database migrations and can take a few minutes before the sign-in page appears.

Does the AI playground work out of the box?

No. The AI playground on the translations page needs an LLM provider to be configured. Without one it shows an error, but translation work is unaffected.

How do I rotate the database password or JWT secret?

Change the PostgreSQL role first, then update POSTGRES_PASSWORD and SPRING_DATASOURCE_PASSWORD together before redeploying. Changing the JWT secret signs everyone out.

Does xCloud automatically back up or update Tolgee?

No. The template pins Tolgee v3.224.8 by immutable digest, so existing sites are not automatically upgraded. Back up first, read Tolgee's release notes, then change the image tag and digest together on your own schedule. Server-level backups and snapshots are available on every Cloud VPS.

What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?

The template's baseline asks for 2 CPU cores, 2048 MB of RAM and 10 GB of disk; measured use in QA was roughly 1.3 to 1.6 GB of RAM. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung, with real headroom above that baseline.

What survives a restart?

Your projects, keys, translations and sessions. QA confirmed they were still there after an xCloud Restart of both the app and database containers.

Which license does Tolgee use?

The open-source code is Apache-2.0. The ee/ directories are under Tolgee's Enterprise license, and this template sets no Enterprise license key.

Is xCloud officially partnered with Tolgee?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Tolgee project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Tolgee project.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
