What is TrailBase?

TrailBase is an open, single-executable backend with type-safe REST and realtime APIs, authentication, file storage, a WebAssembly runtime and an admin UI, built on Rust, Wasmtime and SQLite. Upstream pitches it as a Firebase alternative with fewer moving parts for mobile, web or desktop apps. A self-hosted TrailBase is an alternative to a hosted backend platform such as Firebase, released under the Open Software License 3.0.

What database does TrailBase use?

SQLite, embedded in the single TrailBase container. Databases, configuration, secrets, migrations, uploaded files and WebAssembly assets live under /app/traildepot on trailbase_data, with no separate MariaDB, PostgreSQL or Redis service in this template to run or secure.

How do I sign in to the TrailBase admin?

Open your domain at /_/admin/ and sign in as admin@localhost with the password in the xCloud credentials panel. TrailBase creates the administrator at first boot, and the post-install step swaps its bootstrap password for the generated one.

How do I change the TrailBase admin password?

Editing ADMIN_PASSWORD later does not rotate the live account. Run the supported trail user change-password command inside the container, as shown in the environment notice, then keep the new value in your password manager and update any scripts that use it.

Can you self-host TrailBase with Docker?

Yes. TrailBase publishes an official image, and this template is TrailBase Docker hosting ready to run: the 0.33.8 image pinned by digest, one data volume, a generated password and HTTPS on your own domain, so there is no Compose file for you to keep.

How much RAM does TrailBase need?

For a small installation the manifest floor is 1024 MB of RAM, one core and 10 GB of disk. Records, uploads, indexes and backups grow storage, and the 6 GB plan leaves plenty of headroom.

Does TrailBase support authentication and file storage?

Yes. Upstream lists authentication and file storage alongside REST and realtime APIs, a WebAssembly runtime and an admin UI. Configure each from the dashboard, and set restrictive rules before exposing writes to the internet, then test them as an ordinary user.

Is TrailBase open source?

Yes, under the Open Software License 3.0, so there is no licence fee. Read that licence before redistributing changes to the code. You pay for the Cloud VPS, which gives you a TrailBase cloud of your own.

Are TrailBase API rules open by default?

You define them: this template adds no tables or API rules of its own. Do not expose unrestricted create, update or delete rules until your authorisation policy is clear. Design table rules in the dashboard first, then connect your application and test as an ordinary user.

How do I back up TrailBase?

Back up the whole trailbase_data volume, which holds the SQLite databases, configuration, secrets, migrations, uploads and WebAssembly assets. Stop writes and take an application-consistent copy before upgrades, keep copies off the server, and test restoring it.

How do I upgrade TrailBase?

The install stays on its pinned 0.33.8 image until you adopt a newer template version. Review the release and migration notes and copy the data volume, then move to the newer template version. Nothing upgrades the backend automatically, and migrations may need a tested backup to roll back.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
