What is WatchState?

WatchState's primary goal, according to its README, is to sync your backends' users' play state without relying on third-party services. Jellyfin, Plex and Emby are supported out of the box, so Plex, Jellyfin and Emby sync runs from one instance. It can receive webhook events from media backends, sync watch progress through webhooks or scheduled tasks, and supports multiple users. A self-hosted WatchState is MIT licensed, and the README's own advice is to keep the import task enabled even when webhooks work.

Is WatchState open source?

Yes. WatchState is MIT licensed, so the software has no licence fee. Your cost is the Cloud VPS holding the configuration and database, and large libraries, long sync history and backup exports are what grow the disk.

How much RAM does WatchState need?

The manifest asks for 1 CPU core, 512 MB of RAM and 5 GB of disk. The 6 GB plan leaves comfortable headroom, and large libraries with long history may need more disk for the database, logs and exports.

Can you self-host WatchState with Docker?

Yes, and this template is WatchState Docker hosting without the setup: the official v1.10.3 image pinned by digest, the watchstate_data volume mounted at /config and HTTPS on your domain. There is no database container, because WatchState keeps its own state.

Does WatchState sync between Plex and Jellyfin?

Yes. Upstream supports Jellyfin, Plex and Emby out of the box and syncs play state between your backends without a third-party service. You add each backend from the Backends section using HTTPS server URLs and least-privilege credentials.

Does WatchState sync resume positions as well as watched status?

Yes. Upstream says it can sync watch progress and play state through webhooks or scheduled tasks. How well resume positions carry over depends on each backend's webhook support, so test with one title before relying on it.

Why does WatchState need scheduled imports as well as WatchState webhooks?

Upstream advises keeping the import task enabled even when every backend supports webhooks, because it can pick up events that webhooks missed. Webhooks give near-instant updates, and the scheduled import is the safety net, so run both.

How do I get admin access to WatchState?

Open the HTTPS URL right after install and create the one-time system user immediately, before sharing the address. xCloud generates no credentials for this app, so there is no preset password. Backend tokens are stored inside WatchState.

How do I back up WatchState?

Back up the watchstate_data volume at /config as one unit. It holds configuration, the database, sync state, logs, webhooks and any backup or export data WatchState writes. Keep any play-state exports with the volume backup.

How do I upgrade WatchState?

The install stays on WatchState 1.10.3 until you adopt a newer template version. Back up /config, read the upstream release notes, then test login, backend connectivity and a sync. Roll back by restoring the matching backup.

Is there a WatchState cloud service I can use?

This page is your own WatchState cloud: a dedicated Cloud VPS running the open-source tool, with backend tokens and sync state on a volume of your own. It is a private instance, and only the media servers you add are touched.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
