What is Yopass?

Yopass is an open source, self-hosted service for sharing passwords, files and other sensitive information. A self-hosted Yopass generates a random decryption key and encrypts the secret in your browser using OpenPGP, stores only the encrypted message with an expiration time, and puts the key in the URL fragment, which is not sent to the server. Links can work once or until expiry, and upstream lists optional password protection. It is licensed under Apache-2.0.

On xCloud the install runs Yopass 14.10.0 and Redis 7.4, both pinned by digest. Redis is private, authenticated, capped at 256 MB and set to refuse new writes rather than evict unexpired secrets. The yopass_redis_data volume holds the ciphertext. The free baseline has no accounts, so anyone who can reach the site can create a secret. Yopass Business features are not included.

Can you self-host Yopass with Docker?

Yes, and this template is Yopass Docker hosting without the setup: the official jhaals/yopass 14.10.0 image and a private Redis 7.4 service, both pinned by digest, with generated authentication, one data volume and HTTPS on your domain.

How much RAM does Yopass need?

The template asks for 512 MB of RAM, one CPU core and 4 GB of disk as a floor for Yopass and its Redis sidecar, with Redis capped at 256 MB. The 6 GB plan is the entry rung here, far above what secret sharing needs.

How does a Yopass secret expire or become one-time?

When you encrypt a secret in the browser you choose an expiration period and whether it can be retrieved only once. The server stores the encrypted message with that expiry, and a one-time secret is removed after its first retrieval.

Does one-time retrieval prove who opened a Yopass link?

No. One-time retrieval limits a secret to a single view, reducing exposure, but it does not identify who opened it. Treat the delivery of the link itself as the sensitive step, and send any optional password through a different channel.

Do recipients need an account to open a Yopass secret?

No. Yopass needs no user accounts for the standard secret-sharing flow. Anyone who can reach the site can create a secret, and anyone holding a complete generated link can retrieve it until it expires or is consumed.

Can restoring a Yopass backup bring back a deleted secret?

Yes, and this is a property of the software. Restoring an older backup of yopass_redis_data can resurrect ciphertext for a secret that had already expired or been viewed, so restore only when you must and assume restored links may work again.

What should I back up on a Yopass server?

Back up yopass_redis_data, which holds every encrypted secret and file record along with Redis's own persistence data. Keep the generated Redis password stable and restore it with the same volume. An older backup can still hold ciphertext for secrets already viewed or expired, so set retention accordingly.

How do I rotate the Yopass Redis password?

Back up the volume first, then update REDIS_PASSWORD in the Environment editor and restart or redeploy the whole stack together so Yopass and Redis pick up the new value. Test creating and opening a secret afterwards.

Is Yopass free?

Yes. The Yopass baseline is Apache-2.0 open source, so the code costs nothing. Yopass Business is a separate, purchased offering and is not included or resold here. The Cloud VPS underneath is the only recurring expense.

How do I upgrade Yopass?

14.10.0 and Redis 7.4 remain pinned until you take a newer template version. Check the project's release and licensing notes and copy the Redis volume beforehand. xCloud never upgrades a running site on its own, and a redeploy keeps stored ciphertext in place.

Is there a Yopass cloud service?

Upstream runs a public demo, but it advises self-hosting your own instance for sensitive information. Yopass cloud hosting here means your own instance runs on a Cloud VPS that xCloud prepares, with ciphertext on a volume you own.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
