What is ZoneMinder?

ZoneMinder is an open-source video surveillance system. It records and analyses streams from IP cameras and shows live and recorded video in a web console, and its source is licensed GPL-2.0-or-later. Run on your own server it is self-hosted CCTV software, so recordings stay on infrastructure you control.

On xCloud it is ZoneMinder 1.38.6 as the official image, pinned by digest, with a private MariaDB 11.8 database. The console lives under /zm/ and the site root redirects there. Login is enforced from the first start, and recorded events, logs, the go2rtc config and the database each sit on their own persistent volume.

Can I run ZoneMinder in Docker?

Yes, and this template is ZoneMinder Docker hosting without the setup: the official ZoneMinder 1.38.6 image and MariaDB 11.8, both pinned by digest, with persistent volumes, a generated admin password, a private network for the database and HTTPS on your own domain.

How much RAM does ZoneMinder need?

The template baseline is 1024 MB of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 10 GB of disk; measured idle use in QA was about 280 MiB. Real needs rise with the number of cameras, their resolution and the retention period. The 6 GB plan is the starting point here, well above the baseline.

How do I sign in to ZoneMinder?

Open your HTTPS URL at /zm/ and sign in as admin with the generated Admin Password from the installation credentials. Authentication is enforced from the first start and the upstream default of admin/admin is replaced during setup. The first start can take 1 to 2 minutes.

How do I add cameras?

Open Console > Add and enter the camera's stream details. Cameras must be reachable from the server, so a camera on a private network needs a VPN or a public stream address.

Who can see my camera feeds?

Anyone who can sign in can see every camera feed, so create one account per person under Options > Users instead of sharing the admin login. The exception is optional go2rtc live view: its streams need no ZoneMinder login.

Do I need to open firewall ports?

Only for optional go2rtc WebRTC live view. The listener is published as a public TCP and UDP port on the server, and xCloud does not open them in your firewall. The default live view runs over your HTTPS domain and needs nothing extra.

Will recordings fill the disk?

They can. Footage is stored on the zm_events volume and grows without limit by default, so set a storage limit or event retention under Options and watch free disk space.

Is ZoneMinder free?

Yes. ZoneMinder is open source under GPL-2.0-or-later, so the software has no licence fee. You are billed only for the dedicated Cloud VPS hosting the console and its database.

How do I back up ZoneMinder?

Back up zm_db, zm_events, zm_config and zm_logs together while the stack is stopped. zm_events holds the footage and is usually by far the largest. Nothing schedules the copy, so run it yourself.

How do I upgrade ZoneMinder?

The install stays on its pinned 1.38.6 image until you adopt a newer template version. ZoneMinder upgrades its database schema on start, so back up the volumes and read the upstream release notes first. Existing sites are never upgraded automatically.

How do I change the admin password?

Use Options > Users inside ZoneMinder. The ADMIN_PASSWORD value is applied once during setup, so editing it in the Environment editor later has no effect.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
