What is MongoDB?

MongoDB is a document database designed to help developers build applications faster. It stores data in flexible, JSON-like documents, and its manual lists structured search, data aggregation, full-text search, vector search, geospatial search and time series among the workloads it supports. Run on a server you control, it is a self-hosted MongoDB database and the alternative to a provider-run service such as MongoDB Atlas.

On xCloud it is deployed as one mongo:8.2 container, tagged to the 8.2 minor rather than pinned by digest. The root user, a generated password and a default database come from the install form, and the mongodb_data volume keeps the data. It has no web page: container port 27017 is published on a host port for your own applications.

Can I run MongoDB in Docker?

Yes, and this template is MongoDB Docker hosting without the compose file: it runs mongo:8.2 as one container with the mongodb_data volume at /data/db and port 27017 published on a host port. You enter a root username, database name and password, or let xCloud generate the password.

How much RAM does MongoDB need?

The template manifest asks for 512 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 2 GB of disk as a floor. This page sells the 6 GB tier, well above it. Larger datasets, bigger indexes and more concurrent clients all push memory use up beyond that floor.

How do I connect to a self-hosted MongoDB server?

Copy the Connection String from the credentials panel, which has the form mongodb://user:password@host:port/database?authSource=admin, and open it with mongosh or your driver. The root user authenticates against admin, so keep authSource=admin, and use the published host port, not 27017.

Does MongoDB support transactions?

Yes. Per the MongoDB manual, an operation on a single document is atomic, and MongoDB supports ACID transactions across multiple operations, collections, databases and documents. Nothing extra needs installing in this template to use them from your driver.

Does MongoDB support replication and sharding?

Upstream describes horizontal scaling and built-in high availability. This template deploys one standalone mongod with no replica set and no sharding, so a replica set or a sharded cluster would be something you design and run yourself, on more than this one container.

Is MongoDB free?

MongoDB's community server is free to download and run, under the Server Side Public License version 1. The server plan is what you pay for. Read the licence before offering MongoDB itself as a service to others.

How do I back up a MongoDB database here?

Back up the mongodb_data volume, which holds the full WiredTiger storage, indexes and oplog, or take a logical dump with mongodump through docker exec. Nothing dumps the database on a schedule for you, so schedule your own backup and test a restore.

How do I upgrade MongoDB to a newer version?

The image is mongo:8.2, a tag that follows the latest patch within that minor and is not pinned by digest. A major upgrade also needs setFeatureCompatibilityVersion after the new version starts, so read MongoDB's upgrade notes and back up first. Existing installs are not changed automatically.

Is the database exposed to the internet?

Yes, by design: the port is bound to 0.0.0.0 so outside applications can connect, and anyone who reaches the server with the credentials can too. Restrict it with your firewall, use a strong password, and add TLS in your application or a proxy.

Is this a MongoDB cloud server I can resize?

It is MongoDB on a dedicated Cloud VPS you can resize, so it works as your own MongoDB cloud server. It is one container with no managed failover, and you change the plan for more RAM or disk while mongodb_data stays on the same server.

Should my applications use the root user?

No. Create a user per application from mongosh, for example with readWrite on its own database, and give each its own password. The install form rejects URI delimiter characters like @ in passwords because they are written into the connection string.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
