Yes — it is free and open source under the MIT License. What you pay xCloud for is the dedicated server it runs on and the management around it, not the application itself.

How do I sign in?
With a username and password. xCloud defaults the administrator username to admin (you can change it at install time) and generates a 24-character password, shown once in your xCloud credential panel.
What does xCloud configure automatically?
The generated administrator username and password, a separate secret key used to sign sessions, the persistent flatnotes_data volume, the domain and the HTTPS route. Only the flatnotes web interface is published through xCloud-managed ingress.
What should I back up?
The flatnotes_data volume, as one unit. It holds every note as a Markdown file plus the search index. Because notes are plain files rather than database rows, backup and migration are simple — copy the volume and you have every note in a format any text editor can open.
Can I change the administrator password?
Yes. Keep it stable to preserve access, and when you do want to rotate it, update FLATNOTES_PASSWORD in the Environment editor and restart the app. Leave FLATNOTES_SECRET_KEY untouched when you do — it signs sessions separately from the login itself.
Does xCloud automatically back up or update flatnotes?
No. The template pins flatnotes 5.5.4 by immutable digest; a catalog re-sync affects new installations only. Review upstream release notes and take a verified backup before changing the pinned release.
What are the server requirements?
The template manifest asks for 256 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 2 GB of disk as a floor — flatnotes is a single lightweight container with no database process. This page sells the same 6 GB tier as every other OneClick app, well above what flatnotes itself needs, so there's plenty of room for other work on the same server.
What survives a restart?
Everything on flatnotes_data, because it is a persistent named volume. A restart does not touch existing notes, tags, or the search index.
Why doesn't flatnotes use a database?
By design. Each note is stored as its own Markdown file, and the search index is built from those files and is rebuildable if it's ever lost. That trade-off is flatnotes' core selling point: your notes stay in a portable, human-readable format instead of being locked inside a database schema.
Is xCloud officially partnered with flatnotes?
No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the flatnotes project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source flatnotes project.
Can I run other apps on the same server?
Yes. It is a dedicated Cloud VPS, not a locked appliance, so you can deploy other OneClick apps or your own sites beside it as long as the resources are there.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
