What is Grimmory?

Self-hosted Grimmory is a digital library for people who take their reading seriously, as upstream puts it. It is an independent community fork of Booklore and a self-hosted alternative to Calibre-Web, with smart shelves, metadata lookup from Google Books, Open Library and Amazon, a built-in reader for PDFs, EPUBs and comics, sync through Kobo, OPDS and KOReader, and multi-user accounts with local or OIDC sign-in. It is AGPL-3.0 licensed.

On xCloud the template runs ghcr.io/grimmory-tools/grimmory v3.3.3 beside a private LinuxServer MariaDB 11.4.8, both pinned by digest. Four named volumes hold application data, the book library, pending BookDrop files and the database. The install form asks only for a timezone, and OIDC is off at first so you can create the local administrator.

Is Grimmory free and open source?

Yes. Grimmory is AGPL-3.0 licensed, which means the source is available and the app itself costs nothing. xCloud charges for the Cloud VPS under it. There is no paid Grimmory edition in this template, and your books stay in volumes on your own server.

Can I run Grimmory with Docker?

Yes, and this template is Grimmory Docker hosting without the assembly. It starts the official ghcr.io image at v3.3.3 beside a MariaDB container on a private network, proxies port 6060 behind HTTPS, and mounts volumes for data, books, BookDrop and the database.

How much RAM does Grimmory need?

Grimmory and MariaDB run together, so the manifest asks for 1.5 GB of RAM, two cores and 10 GB of disk. The 6 GB Cloud VPS sold here handles a Grimmory cloud install. Library size and the files in it decide how much disk you need.

Is Grimmory the same as Booklore?

No. Upstream calls Grimmory an independent community fork of Booklore, so it is a separate project with its own releases. This page covers Grimmory v3.3.3 only, and Booklore has its own page. Check each project's documentation before you move a library between them.

Does Grimmory work with Kobo and KOReader?

Upstream lists device sync: connect a Kobo, use any OPDS-compatible app, or sync progress with KOReader. Setup happens inside Grimmory after you sign in, using your own domain as the address. This page does not test specific devices or firmware.

Which formats does Grimmory read?

Upstream lists EPUB, MOBI, AZW, AZW3 and FB2 for ebooks, PDF for documents, CBZ, CBR and CB7 for comics, and M4B, M4A, MP3 and OPUS for audiobooks. The built-in reader opens PDFs, EPUBs and comics in the browser with annotations and highlights.

Does Grimmory need MariaDB?

Yes. The template runs a LinuxServer MariaDB 11.4.8 container beside Grimmory, with generated database names, users and passwords. It has no published host port and is private to the Compose network. Keep the generated credentials stable, because changing them in one service breaks database access.

How do I back up Grimmory?

Back up all four named volumes together from one consistent point: grimmory_data, grimmory_books, grimmory_bookdrop and grimmory_mariadb. Pause writes, stop the application, copy the volumes, then restart. Restore the same set together, and test a restore before relying on it.

How do I update Grimmory?

Your install stays on its pinned v3.3.3 version, with MariaDB pinned too, until you adopt a newer template version. Back up the four volumes first and read the upstream release notes. Afterwards check container health, sign in, open an existing book and confirm BookDrop still processes files.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
