What is Grimmory?

Grimmory is a free, open-source self-hosted digital library for ebooks, comics, documents and audiobooks, with browser reading, metadata, shelves, reading progress and multi-user access. This template deploys version 3.3.3.

Is Grimmory free?

Yes — it is free and open source under the GNU Affero General Public License v3 (AGPL-3.0). What you pay xCloud for is the dedicated server it runs on and the management around it, not the application itself.

Can I self-host Grimmory?

Yes — that is exactly what this template deploys. It brings up the official Grimmory 3.3.3 image alongside a private MariaDB 11.4.8 service, both pinned by immutable digest, mounts its four persistent volumes and publishes it over HTTPS on your domain in minutes instead of assembled by hand.

How do I sign in and create an administrator?

There is no default administrator account and no generated password — none is shipped. Open your HTTPS URL after installation and create the first administrator yourself through Grimmory's own setup screen.

What does xCloud configure automatically?

The Grimmory URL, a private MariaDB database with a generated name, user and password, all four persistent volumes, the domain and the HTTPS route. Only Grimmory's web interface is published through xCloud-managed HTTPS — MariaDB stays private to the internal network.

How do I add books to my library?

Create a library rooted under /books, which is persistent, or place files into /bookdrop for Grimmory to review and import through its BookDrop flow. Confirm one item opens correctly before adding your full collection.

Is OIDC configured for single sign-on?

No. OIDC ships disabled (FORCE_DISABLE_OIDC) so local administrator setup stays available immediately after install. Configure OIDC later from inside Grimmory only after you've confirmed your identity provider and its public callback URL.

What should I back up?

All four volumes together, from the same maintenance window: grimmory_data (application state), grimmory_books (managed library files), grimmory_bookdrop (pending BookDrop input) and grimmory_mariadb (the database). A database-only snapshot is not a complete Grimmory backup — pause writes or stop Grimmory for a coordinated snapshot and test restoration in an isolated installation.

Backups in xCloud

Does xCloud automatically back up or update Grimmory?

No. The template pins Grimmory 3.3.3 and MariaDB 11.4.8 by immutable digest; a catalog re-sync affects new installations only. Review Grimmory and MariaDB release notes, take a coordinated backup of all four volumes, then verify sign-in, an existing library item and BookDrop processing before changing either pinned image.

What are the server requirements?

The template manifest asks for 1.5 GB of RAM, two CPU cores and 10 GB of disk as a floor. This page sells the 6 GB tier, comfortable headroom above that floor for MariaDB running alongside the application — leave extra disk beyond the floor for your media collection and its backups.

What survives a restart?

Everything on grimmory_data, grimmory_books, grimmory_bookdrop and grimmory_mariadb, because all four are persistent named volumes. Restarting the containers does not touch your administrator account, library files, pending imports or database.

Is xCloud officially partnered with Grimmory?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Grimmory project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Grimmory project.

Can I run other apps on the same server?

Yes. It is a dedicated Cloud VPS, not a locked appliance, so you can deploy other OneClick apps or your own sites beside it as long as the resources are there.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
