What is HedgeDoc?

HedgeDoc lets you create real-time collaborative Markdown notes. Upstream describes it as inspired by Hackpad, Etherpad and similar collaborative editors, and it originated with the team at HackMD before forking into its own organisation. Run on your own server it is a self-hosted HedgeDoc, an alternative to a hosted notes tool such as HackMD or Google Docs, with the code under the AGPL-3.0 licence and your notes in your own database.

On xCloud it is the upstream HedgeDoc 1.11.1 image with PostgreSQL 17.7, both pinned by digest. The hedgedoc_db volume holds accounts, notes, revisions and permissions, and hedgedoc_uploads holds uploaded files. Anonymous note creation and editing are disabled, and new notes default to the limited permission. The local login offers no self-service password reset or two-factor sign-in.

Can I run HedgeDoc in Docker?

Yes, and this template is HedgeDoc Docker hosting without the setup: the upstream quay.io/hedgedoc/hedgedoc 1.11.1 image and PostgreSQL 17.7, both pinned by digest, with an uploads volume, a database volume and HTTPS on your own domain.

How much RAM does HedgeDoc need?

HedgeDoc asks for 1024 MB of memory, a single CPU core and 5 GB of storage at minimum, and the need grows with note history and uploads. Start on the 6 GB tier; it covers that floor with margin.

How do I create the first HedgeDoc account?

Open your URL and register the first local account with email registration enabled, the install default. Then create a note and pick the sharing permission that suits your team. Close registration afterwards if public signup is not wanted.

How do I close HedgeDoc registration?

Set CMD_ALLOW_EMAIL_REGISTER to false in the Environment editor and use Save and Redeploy. Do it after you have registered your own account, because the local login is the only way in until you configure an identity provider.

Does HedgeDoc support password reset or two-factor login?

Is HedgeDoc free?

Yes. HedgeDoc is open source under the AGPL-3.0 licence, so the software has no fee. Your spend is the dedicated Cloud VPS holding your notes and uploads. That makes it a HedgeDoc cloud of your own.

How do I back up HedgeDoc?

Back up hedgedoc_db and hedgedoc_uploads together: the first holds accounts, notes, revisions and permissions, the second holds uploaded files. A PostgreSQL pg_dump gives a consistent database copy. Nothing schedules it, so run it yourself and keep a copy off the server.

How do I upgrade HedgeDoc?

The install stays on its pinned 1.11.1 image until you adopt a newer template version. Back up the database and uploads first, read the release notes, then recreate the containers without deleting volumes. Nothing upgrades automatically.

Where are HedgeDoc uploads stored?

Uploaded files sit on the hedgedoc_uploads volume, separate from the database. Keep a copy from the same backup window as the database dump so notes and their attachments stay consistent when you restore, and never delete the volume during a redeploy.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
