What is Kroki?

Self-hosted Kroki is a stateless HTTP API that turns textual diagram definitions into images. Upstream describes a unified API with support for many diagram languages, including PlantUML, GraphViz, D2, Vega, Vega-Lite, WaveDrom, Nomnoml, Pikchr and BlockDiag, and calls can be encoded GET URLs or POST requests. It is MIT licensed, and it replaces running a separate rendering service for each diagram-as-code tool, so one endpoint covers the lot.

On xCloud the template runs yuzutech/kroki 0.32.1, pinned by digest, as the core image only, with KROKI_SAFE_MODE set to secure so renderers cannot load remote URLs or local files. The optional Mermaid, BPMN, Excalidraw and diagrams.net companion containers are not deployed. There is no persistent volume, no data and no built-in authentication.

Is Kroki free and open source?

Yes. Kroki is MIT licensed and its code is public. xCloud's charge covers the dedicated Cloud VPS that serves the API. The template deploys only the core image with its bundled engines and adds no paid Kroki tier.

Can I run Kroki with Docker?

Yes, and this template is Kroki Docker hosting without the assembly. It starts the yuzutech/kroki 0.32.1 image, pinned by digest, as one stateless container in secure mode, and proxies port 8000 behind HTTPS on your domain. It has no volumes.

How much RAM does Kroki need?

The manifest floor is 1 GB of RAM, one core and 4 GB of disk. A Kroki cloud install on the 6 GB Cloud VPS sold here leaves headroom above that floor for concurrent render requests and other apps on the same server.

Which diagram types does Kroki support?

How do I render a diagram with Kroki?

Send a POST with the diagram text to the engine path on your domain, setting an Accept header such as SVG, or use a GET URL carrying the deflated, base64-encoded definition. The template README shows a curl example for PlantUML. Upstream documents JSON requests too.

Is the Kroki API protected by a login?

No. Kroki has no built-in authentication, so the endpoint is a public rendering API unless you add access control at your edge. Apply suitable request-size and rate limits for untrusted traffic. Secure mode stops renderers loading remote URLs and local files.

Does Kroki store my diagrams?

No. The template is stateless: diagram sources and rendered outputs are request-scoped and are not kept in a volume. Store important source definitions and outputs in your own durable system, such as your repository, because Kroki cannot return them later.

How do I back up Kroki?

There is nothing to back up. The template has no Kroki data volume, and diagram sources and outputs are not retained. Keep your diagram definitions in version control, and keep a note of the version you validated. Server-level snapshots cover the rest of the machine.

How do I update Kroki?

Your install stays on its pinned 0.32.1 version until you adopt a newer template version. Read the upstream release notes and security changes first, then adopt it and render a few representative formats again, such as SVG, PNG and PDF, to confirm they still work.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
