What is Maloja?

Maloja is, in its README's words, a simple self-hosted music scrobble database to create personal listening statistics. Your library is not synced with any public music database, so you can follow your own tagging schema. Its features include associated artists, multi-artist tracks, custom images, proxy scrobbling that forwards your scrobbles to other services, standard-compliant APIs and manual scrobbling. Self-hosted Maloja is a listening history you run yourself instead of a hosted service such as Last.fm. It is licensed under GPL-3.0.

Is Maloja free?

Yes. Maloja is open source under GPL-3.0, and you can read the licence at the pinned v3.2.6 tag linked on this page, so keep the notices and share source for modified versions. xCloud bills for the Cloud VPS under it, not for Maloja, and there is no per-scrobble fee.

Can you self-host Maloja with Docker?

Yes, and this Maloja Docker hosting template does it for you: the krateng/maloja image, pinned by digest, is a single container on your server, behind xCloud nginx and HTTPS, with its port 42010 bound only to localhost. It is not a Maloja cloud account, so your listening history stays with you.

How much RAM does Maloja need?

The manifest minimum for Maloja is 1024 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 5 GB of disk. Artwork caching, imports and a large listening history grow disk use. The 6 GB tier here leaves a very wide margin.

How do I sign in to Maloja?

Open your HTTPS address and sign in with the generated administrator password from the credentials panel. Then create a separate API key in Maloja for each scrobbling client. There is no separate username in the template, and the password is applied from the environment at every start.

How do I connect a scrobbling client to Maloja?

Create an API key for the client in Maloja, then point the client at your HTTPS address. Compatible clients use Maloja's native API, or its ListenBrainz-compatible, GNU FM or Audioscrobbler endpoints. Use one key per client so you can revoke each one separately.

Can I change the Maloja administrator password?

Yes, through Maloja's administrator interface, but also keep MALOJA_FORCE_PASSWORD in the Environment editor in sync before the next redeploy. Otherwise the configured value is applied again when the container starts and replaces your new password.

Does Maloja support manual scrobbling?

Yes. Upstream lists manual scrobbling, so you can submit a scrobble through the web interface for listening that no app tracked, such as vinyl or background music. It also lists custom images and proxy scrobbling to other services.

What optional integrations does Maloja support?

Last.fm, Spotify and AudioDB metadata credentials are optional and configured in Maloja after installation. None is set up by the template, and your listening history is not synced with any public music database unless you configure proxy scrobbling.

How do I back up Maloja?

Back up the maloja_data volume, which is the complete persistence boundary and should be restored as one unit while the container is stopped. Protect backups, because they contain listening history, authentication state, API keys and optional third-party credentials.

How do I upgrade Maloja?

Pinned 3.2.6 remains in place on a live install, with any newer template version adopted only by you. Newer upstream tags exist. Back up the volume first and read the release notes, then sign in and send a test scrobble to confirm.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
