What is OpenEMR?
OpenEMR is a free, open-source electronic health records and medical practice management platform, covering patient records, scheduling, billing, prescriptions and clinical workflows. This template deploys version 8.3.0.
Is OpenEMR free?
Yes — it is free and open source under the GNU General Public License v3 (GPL-3.0). What you pay xCloud for is the dedicated server it runs on and the management around it, not the application itself.
Is this deployment HIPAA-compliant?
No claim of HIPAA compliance or any regulatory certification is made here, and none should be assumed. Deploying open-source EHR software does not by itself make an installation compliant with HIPAA or any other regulation. You are responsible for the legal, security, access-control, encryption, audit and retention decisions your jurisdiction requires.
Can I self-host OpenEMR?
Yes — that is exactly what this template deploys. It brings up the official OpenEMR 8.3.0 image alongside a private MariaDB 11.8.8 service, both pinned by immutable digest, mounts three coordinated persistent volumes and publishes it over HTTPS on your domain in minutes instead of assembled by hand.
How do I sign in?
You choose an administrator username (3-32 letters, numbers, dashes or underscores) during installation. The password field is pre-filled with an xCloud-generated 24-character value, which you can keep or replace before installing.
What does xCloud configure automatically?
The database name, database user, database password and a separate MariaDB root password, plus the three persistent volumes, the domain and the HTTPS route. Only OpenEMR's web interface is published through xCloud-managed HTTPS — MariaDB stays private to the internal network.
Can I use this for real patient data right away?
Use synthetic or properly authorized healthcare data only until you have confirmed your own legal, privacy, security, audit, encryption and retention requirements. Complete your organization settings inside OpenEMR before entering anything else.
What should I back up?
openemr_db, openemr_sites and openemr_logs together, as one application-consistent set. A database-only backup is not complete — uploaded documents and site configuration live in openemr_sites, outside MariaDB. Pause writes where practical, retain an off-server copy, and test restoration.
Does xCloud automatically back up or update OpenEMR?
No. The template pins OpenEMR 8.3.0 and MariaDB 11.8.8 by immutable digest; a catalog re-sync affects new installations only. Before an intentional upgrade, back up all three volumes, review OpenEMR's release and upgrade documentation, and never run a command that deletes volumes against an existing installation.
What are the server requirements?
The template manifest asks for 4 GB of RAM, two CPU cores and 20 GB of disk as a floor — OpenEMR and MariaDB together need real headroom. This page sells the 16 GB tier, well above that floor, so there's room for records, documents, and reporting jobs to grow.
What survives a restart?
Everything on openemr_db, openemr_sites and openemr_logs, because all three are persistent named volumes. Restarting the containers does not touch your database, site configuration, documents or logs.
Is xCloud officially partnered with OpenEMR?
No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the OpenEMR project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source OpenEMR project.
Can I run other apps on the same server?
Yes. It is a dedicated Cloud VPS, not a locked appliance, so you can deploy other OneClick apps or your own sites beside it as long as the resources are there — though a database-heavy application like OpenEMR is usually best kept on its own server.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
