Its README lists project planning and scheduling, product roadmap and release planning, agile and Scrum, time tracking, cost reporting and budgeting, bug tracking, wikis, forums and meeting agendas. Is OpenProject free to self-host?

Yes. The Community Edition this template deploys is free software under GPL-3.0, with the licence linked from this page at the pinned v17.6.0 tag. The xCloud charge is for the Cloud VPS, never for OpenProject itself. Upstream also sells hosted and Enterprise options, which are not part of this install.

What is the difference between OpenProject Community and Enterprise?

Upstream's README describes the OpenProject Community Edition as free of charge and self-hosted, and an Enterprise Edition with cloud or on-premises options, comprehensive support and add-ons. This template deploys the unmodified Community image and does not enable any Enterprise feature, so do not expect Enterprise add-ons here.

Is OpenProject a good alternative to Jira?

OpenProject offers work packages, agile and Scrum and bug tracking, plus planning and time tracking, on a server you host. This page makes no claim about Jira and no feature-parity claim, so test your own workflow on a Community Edition install before moving a team over.

Does OpenProject have Gantt charts?

How much RAM does OpenProject need?

The template manifest asks for 4096 MB of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 10 GB of disk across the web, worker, cron, PostgreSQL and Memcached processes. Larger teams, more concurrent work and attachment growth need more. This page sells the 16 GB tier, which leaves ample headroom above that floor.

Can you self-host OpenProject with Docker?

Yes, and this OpenProject Docker hosting template does it for you: the official slim image, PostgreSQL and Memcached, all pinned by digest, are composed on your own server instead of an OpenProject cloud account. Only the web port is published, through HTTPS on your domain.

How do I upgrade OpenProject?

Upgrades are not automatic. The template pins OpenProject 17.6.0, and re-syncing the catalog touches new installs only. Back up both volumes, review OpenProject's release and migration notes, then adopt a newer template version when one is published, and check login, projects and attachments afterwards.

How do I back up OpenProject?

Include both volumes in one backup: openproject_postgres_data (users, projects, work packages and configuration) and openproject_assets (attachments). For consistency, stop writes or the stack and capture both from the same moment, keep the environment values, store copies off the server, and test a restore.

Is email set up and is sign-up open?

Email is not configured: set up SMTP before inviting teammates or relying on password-reset mail. Public self-registration is disabled by this template, so people join by invitation. Review project visibility and registration policies before production use, and keep the seeded password out of shared channels.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
