What is Redmine?

Redmine is a flexible project management web application written in Ruby on Rails and released under the GPL-2.0-or-later licence. It combines projects, configurable trackers and workflows for issues, roadmaps, wikis, time tracking and role-based access in one application. Running self-hosted Redmine is the option for teams that would otherwise track their work in a hosted tracker such as Jira and want the data on their own server.

What is Redmine used for?

Redmine is used to plan and track work across projects. It suits software teams, agencies and any group that needs one shared issue tracker.

Is Redmine free?

Yes. Redmine is free, open-source software under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or any later version, so there is no per-user licence fee. On xCloud you pay for the dedicated Cloud VPS that runs Redmine and PostgreSQL and the deployment around them, not for the application.

How much RAM does Redmine need?

How do I upgrade Redmine?

Redmine 6.1.1 and PostgreSQL 16.4 are pinned by digest, so an existing site does not change when the template does. Back up the database and files together, read Redmine's upgrade and migration notes, check plugin and theme compatibility, then move to a newer template version and test login and a project.

How do I back up Redmine?

A Redmine backup means both volumes from the same consistency point: redmine_db holds users, projects, issues and settings, and redmine_files holds attachments. Stop writes or the stack first, keep the environment values needed to reconnect, store copies off-server and test a restore. Plugins and themes you add later need their own backup.

Which databases does Redmine support?

This template uses a private PostgreSQL 16.4 container on the internal network, with no published port, and generates the database name, user and password for you. Other databases are outside the template; check Redmine's own install notes before you plan a different one for a hand-built setup.

How do I sign in the first time?

Sign in as admin with the generated 24-character password from the credentials panel, which also shows the email you entered. The post-install step replaces Redmine's upstream default admin password before xCloud reports the install complete, so the well-known default never works on your site.

Does Redmine send email out of the box?

No. Nothing in the template configures outgoing mail, so set up SMTP in Redmine's administration settings before you invite users or rely on password-reset email. Also review authentication, project visibility, attachment limits and the host and protocol settings on first run.

Can I change the database password or secret key?

Not on its own. POSTGRES_PASSWORD initialises PostgreSQL and Redmine reads it on every boot, so rotate it in PostgreSQL first and update the value together. Keep REDMINE_SECRET_KEY_BASE stable, because changing it invalidates sessions and can break encrypted data.

Can I run Redmine in the cloud on xCloud?

Yes. For Redmine cloud use, xCloud sets up a dedicated Cloud VPS, deploys Redmine and PostgreSQL on it and attaches your domain and certificate. Teams with an existing VPS elsewhere can attach it as a self-managed server and deploy there instead.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
