What is Kanboard?

Kanboard is project management software that focuses on the Kanban methodology, and self-hosted Kanboard is a self-hosted Kanban board you run on your own server instead of renting a hosted board such as Trello. It is released under the MIT License. Upstream states plainly that the application is in maintenance mode: the author is not developing new major features, only small fixes, and releases depend on community contributions.

The kanboard_data volume holds the database and uploaded files, and kanboard_plugins holds installed plugins. HTTPS is on your domain. Is Kanboard free?

Yes. Kanboard is free and open source under the MIT License, linked from this page at the pinned v1.2.54 tag. xCloud bills for the Cloud VPS under it, not for Kanboard, and there are no per-user fees. Plugins from other authors may carry their own terms, which this page does not cover.

Is Kanboard a Trello alternative?

It can be: Kanboard is Kanban project-management software you host yourself, with boards, columns, swimlanes and cards. It is a separate product, and this page makes no feature-parity or import claim. Your data stays on your own server.

Can you run Kanboard with Docker?

Yes, and this Kanboard Docker hosting template does it for you: the official multi-architecture image, pinned by digest, runs as one container under Docker Compose on your Cloud VPS, not a Kanboard cloud account. HTTPS is in front and the container port is bound to localhost only.

Does Kanboard have an API?

Kanboard's documentation includes an API reference, and the API belongs to the same application you deploy here. This page does not describe its protocol or promise specific methods, so check the upstream docs for your version before building an integration, and keep API access behind the same login.

Does Kanboard support plugins?

Yes. Installed plugins live on their own kanboard_plugins volume, so they persist beside your project data and survive a restart. Install only reviewed plugins, back up both volumes before adding one, and check that a plugin suits version 1.2.54 first, because upstream is in maintenance mode.

What is the default Kanboard login?

Upstream's first-boot default is insecure, so this template replaces it. The username is fixed as admin and the password is a generated 24-character value shown in the credentials panel. There is no default password to look up, so sign in with the generated one and change it in your profile.

How much RAM does Kanboard need?

The template manifest asks for 1024 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 5 GB of disk as a floor. Attachments, plugins and a long task history may need more disk and memory over time. This page sells the 6 GB tier, which leaves ample headroom and room for other apps.

How do I back up Kanboard?

Take one backup of the kanboard_data and kanboard_plugins volumes together. The data volume holds the SQLite database and uploaded files, and the plugins volume holds installed plugins. Stop writes or use an SQLite-aware snapshot for consistency, keep off-server copies, and test a restore.

How do I upgrade Kanboard?

Upgrades are not automatic. The template pins v1.2.54 by immutable digest, and a catalog re-sync affects new installs only. Back up both volumes, read the upstream release and upgrade notes, then update the image pin on your own schedule. Never use docker compose down -v for an upgrade.

Is Kanboard still maintained?

Upstream says the application is in maintenance mode: the author is not actively developing new major features, only small fixes, and new releases depend on community contributions. This page therefore makes no claim of active feature development, and the template pins one tested release.

Can I change the administrator password?

Yes, from your Kanboard user profile. Editing ADMIN_PASSWORD in the Environment editor does not rotate the existing account after the first boot, because it only replaces the insecure default during installation. Change it in the profile, and keep a backup of the data volume before large changes.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
