What is Kimai?

Self-hosted Kimai is an open-source, multi-user time-tracking platform. Upstream calls it professional grade, handling freelancers as well as companies with dozens or hundreds of users, with a JSON API, invoicing, data exports, multi-timer and punch-in punch-out mode, tagging, SAML, LDAP or database sign-in, two-factor authentication and plugins. You can run it on your own server in place of a hosted time tracker such as Toggl or Clockify, and it is AGPL-3.0 licensed.

On xCloud the template runs kimai/kimai2 2.67.0 with a private MariaDB 11.8.3 sidecar, both pinned by digest. Three volumes hold the database, uploaded data and plugins. The form asks for nothing: xCloud generates the secret and the administrator password, and the login is admin@ plus your domain. Public self-registration stays off, and mail uses a null transport until you configure SMTP.

Is Kimai free and open source?

Yes. Kimai is licensed AGPL-3.0, so the source is public and the app itself costs nothing. If you modify and distribute it, preserve the upstream notices and provide the source. xCloud bills the Cloud VPS under it, and the template adds no paid Kimai edition.

Can I run Kimai with Docker?

Yes, and this template is Kimai Docker hosting without the assembly. It starts the kimai/kimai2 2.67.0 image beside a private MariaDB 11.8.3 container, both pinned by digest, proxies port 8001 behind HTTPS and mounts volumes for data, plugins and the database.

How much RAM does Kimai need?

Kimai and MariaDB share the server, so the manifest asks for 2 GB of RAM, one core and 10 GB of disk. A Kimai cloud install on the 6 GB Cloud VPS sold here leaves headroom above that floor.

How do I sign in to Kimai?

Open your HTTPS URL and sign in with the email admin@ followed by your domain, plus the generated password from the installation credentials. Create a customer, project and activity before you record the first timesheet. Change the password inside Kimai afterwards.

Does Kimai have an API?

Yes. Upstream lists a JSON API among its features, alongside data exports and invoicing. Create credentials inside Kimai and call the API on your own domain. This page does not test specific integrations, so check the upstream documentation for your version.

Can Kimai create invoices?

Upstream lists invoicing and data exports among Kimai's features, together with user, customer and project specific rates. Set up customers, rates and projects first, then generate invoices from recorded timesheets. Check the invoice templates in the upstream documentation for your version.

Can people register themselves in Kimai?

No. Public self-registration stays disabled, which is Kimai's default configuration, so only accounts an administrator creates can sign in. Upstream also lists role and team permissions, so decide what each person may see before you add them.

Does Kimai send email?

Not out of the box. The template uses a local null mail transport, so Kimai sends no external email until you configure a complete SMTP transport in the Environment editor. Do that before relying on email-driven workflows such as password resets.

How do I back up Kimai?

Back up all three volumes together: kimai_db for MariaDB data, kimai_data for uploads and application data, and kimai_plugins for installed plugins. Keep APP_SECRET with the backup, use a consistent database dump, and test a restore before relying on it.

How do I update Kimai?

Your install stays on its pinned 2.67.0 version, with MariaDB pinned too, until you adopt a newer template version. Back up all volumes and APP_SECRET first, then read the upstream release and migration notes. Afterwards sign in and open an existing timesheet.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
