What is PatchMon?

PatchMon is an open-source Linux patch management and automation platform that gives operations teams one place to monitor, patch and secure a fleet. Upstream describes a lightweight agent that talks outbound-only to the server, with host and package inventory, compliance scanning and approved patch runs. A self-hosted PatchMon is an alternative to commercial patch tools such as Automox or Red Hat Satellite, released under AGPL-3.0, while upstream also sells a separate PatchMon Cloud.

On xCloud it is PatchMon 2.1.3 from the official server image with PostgreSQL 17, Redis 7 and guacd as private services, all pinned by digest. xCloud generates the secrets and serves one HTTPS origin. Optional AI providers, OIDC, notifications and external integrations are not enabled in the template.

What does PatchMon monitor?

PatchMon monitors enrolled hosts: their OS, kernel, uptime and last check-in, every installed package and which are outdated, configured repositories and Docker containers. Upstream adds compliance scans, plus alerts for hosts that go down and for pending updates.

Which Linux package managers does PatchMon support?

Upstream lists apt, dnf, yum, apk and pacman on Linux, FreeBSD pkg, and a Windows agent as well. The same agent and control plane handle them, so one PatchMon server can track a mixed fleet of operating systems.

Do PatchMon agents need inbound ports?

No. Upstream says the agent communicates outbound-only to the server, so monitored hosts need no inbound firewall changes, no SSH or WinRM exposure and no VPN for reporting. Hosts only need outbound access to reach your PatchMon HTTPS domain.

Can you self-host PatchMon with Docker?

Yes. Upstream deploys with Docker Compose, and this template is PatchMon Docker hosting without the setup: the 2.1.3 server image with PostgreSQL, Redis and guacd, pinned by digest, two volumes and HTTPS on your domain.

How much RAM does PatchMon need?

The manifest asks for 2048 MB of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 10 GB of disk. Fleet size, inventory history, concurrent patch jobs and remote sessions can require more, so monitor capacity as you enrol hosts.

Is PatchMon open source?

Yes. The server is AGPL-3.0 software, so it is free to self-host. Upstream also offers a paid PatchMon Cloud, which is separate. Here you pay for the Cloud VPS, making this a PatchMon cloud of your own.

Who becomes the first PatchMon administrator?

Whoever opens the site and creates the first account, so do it immediately after install, before you share the URL with anyone. Then set Settings, then Server URL to your public domain, or agent enrolment will fail.

How do I back up PatchMon?

Back up patchmon_postgres_data and patchmon_redis_data together. PostgreSQL holds users, hosts, settings and inventories, while Redis holds queue and cache state. Stop writes before a filesystem copy and test restores on an isolated install before relying on them.

How do I upgrade PatchMon?

The install stays on its pinned 2.1.3 image until you adopt a newer template version. Read the upstream release notes and back up both volumes first, because migrations may mean rolling back requires restoring the backup.

Can I change the PatchMon database passwords?

Not by editing the environment alone. Passwords initialise the persistent services, so rotate the password inside PostgreSQL or Redis first, then update the matching value and redeploy. Keep JWT_SECRET, SESSION_SECRET and AI_ENCRYPTION_KEY stable at all times.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
