What is Zabbix?

Zabbix is an enterprise-class, open-source distributed monitoring solution released under AGPL-3.0-only. Upstream describes it as monitoring the performance and availability of network devices, servers, services and other IT resources, using an agent or an agentless approach. It offers resource discovery, problem detection, alerts and notifications, dashboards with graphs and maps, and distributed monitoring. Self-hosted Zabbix is the option for teams that would otherwise pay for a hosted monitoring service such as Datadog.

On xCloud the template runs the Zabbix server and the Nginx web frontend at 7.4.5 next to a private PostgreSQL 17.11 database, all pinned by digest. Four volumes hold the database, alert scripts, server modules and the one-time administrator-rotation marker. Only the web interface is published. What is Zabbix used for?

Zabbix is used to watch the performance and availability of servers, network devices, services and applications. It collects metrics with an agent or agentless checks, detects problems, sends alerts and shows the data in dashboards. Operations teams use it as one place to see what is healthy and what is not.

Is Zabbix free?

Yes. Zabbix is open source under AGPL-3.0-only and carries no software licence fee. Optional Zabbix subscriptions, training and professional services are separate upstream offerings that this template does not include. On xCloud you pay for the dedicated Cloud VPS that runs the stack and the deployment around it.

How much RAM does Zabbix need?

The template's starting requirement is 4 GiB of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 20 GiB of disk. This page sells the 6 GB Cloud VPS as the entry rung, which sits close to that floor rather than far above it. More monitored hosts, frequent checks, long history retention or heavy event volume call for a larger size.

Can you run Zabbix with Docker?

Yes. For Zabbix Docker hosting the template runs the official zabbix-server and web-nginx images at 7.4.5 with a private PostgreSQL 17.11 container, all pinned by digest, and mounts four named volumes. A bootstrap step replaces the upstream Admin credential before the web interface opens, then HTTPS goes on your domain.

How do I upgrade Zabbix?

Zabbix 7.4.5 and PostgreSQL 17.11 are pinned by digest and only change when you move to a newer template version. Stop writes, take a verified backup, read Zabbix's release notes and database upgrade requirements, update all image digests together and check login and a collected value. Database migrations may not be reversible.

How do I back up Zabbix?

A Zabbix backup covers four volumes together: zabbix_postgres_data holds users, hosts, items, history, triggers and dashboards, zabbix_alertscripts and zabbix_modules hold what you added, and zabbix_bootstrap_state holds the one-time rotation marker. Take it at an application-consistent point, keep a copy off-server and test a restore.

Does Zabbix need an agent?

Not always. Upstream describes both agent and agentless acquisition of metrics. This template does not enrol any target for you, so after sign-in you add each host yourself and choose a template, agent or agentless check. The suggested first step is a synthetic host with an HTTP check.

Which administrator credentials does xCloud generate?

You choose the administrator username, which defaults to Admin, and xCloud generates a 32-character password and all PostgreSQL credentials. The bootstrap step replaces the upstream Admin and zabbix login exactly once before the web interface becomes ready. A password you change inside Zabbix later is kept.

Is the Zabbix server or database exposed to the internet?

No. Only the web interface is published, on a localhost port that xCloud proxies over HTTPS. PostgreSQL and the Zabbix server process have no host port. Remember that monitoring targets, agents and any firewall rules between them and your server stay your responsibility.

Are external scripts and webhooks safe to enable?

Review each one first. Alert scripts live on the zabbix_alertscripts volume and modules on zabbix_modules, and integrations can reach other systems, so treat any script, media type, webhook or stored target credential like a credential with outbound network access, and grant it the least access it needs.

Can I run Zabbix in the cloud on xCloud?

Yes. For Zabbix cloud use, xCloud sets up a dedicated Cloud VPS, deploys the server, web and PostgreSQL containers on it and attaches your domain and certificate. An existing VPS at another provider works too: attach it as a self-managed server and the Zabbix stack deploys onto it.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
