Is PgBackWeb free?
Yes — PgBackWeb 0.5.2 is free and open source under the GNU Affero General Public License v3 (AGPL-3.0). What you pay xCloud for is the dedicated server it runs on and the management around it, not the software itself.
Can I self-host PgBackWeb?
Yes — that is exactly what this template deploys. It brings up the official PgBackWeb image alongside a private PostgreSQL database for its own metadata, both pinned by immutable digest, mounts two persistent volumes, and publishes it over HTTPS on your domain in minutes instead of assembled by hand.
Who becomes the administrator, and how do I sign in?
xCloud does not generate a PgBackWeb administrator account. Open the generated HTTPS URL after deploy and create the first administrator yourself, immediately — PgBackWeb 0.5.2 enforces a single first-user bootstrap, so whoever visits first claims that role.
What does xCloud configure automatically?
A private PostgreSQL database for PgBackWeb's own metadata, with a generated name, user and password, a stable 64-character encryption key, persistent storage, the domain and the HTTPS route. Only the PgBackWeb application is published — the PostgreSQL metadata database stays private to the internal network.
Does PgBackWeb back up any database automatically after install?
No. PgBackWeb ships with no PostgreSQL targets or storage destinations configured. You add each target database's connection string, test it, then create a backup task with its own schedule, retention and destination inside the app.
What is the difference between PgBackWeb's own database and the databases it backs up?
pgbackweb_postgres holds PgBackWeb's own metadata — its users, schedules, encrypted connection strings and execution history — not customer data. The PostgreSQL databases it actually backs up are external targets you connect to from inside the app; xCloud's installation form never asks for those credentials.
What should I back up?
pgbackweb_postgres and pgbackweb_backups together, from the same recovery point: the metadata volume holds your targets, schedules and execution history, while the backups volume holds the archive files when local storage is selected. If you use S3 storage instead, protect and version that external bucket independently.
Does xCloud automatically back up or update PgBackWeb itself?
No. The template pins PgBackWeb and PostgreSQL by immutable digest; a catalog re-sync affects new installations only. Before updating, review upstream release notes, pause backup jobs, take and verify a complete backup of both volumes, then update deliberately without deleting volumes.
What happens if I change the encryption key?
PgBackWeb uses PBW_ENCRYPTION_KEY to protect stored connection strings and destination credentials. Changing it after install breaks PgBackWeb's ability to decrypt secrets it already saved — keep it stable for the life of the installation, including across restarts and restores.
What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?
The template manifest asks for 1 GB of RAM, one CPU core and 10 GB of disk as a floor for PgBackWeb alongside its private PostgreSQL database. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung, with real headroom for concurrent dumps, restore staging and retained local backup archives.
What survives a restart?
Everything on pgbackweb_postgres and pgbackweb_backups, because both are persistent named volumes. Restarting the containers does not touch your targets, schedules, execution history or locally stored archives.
Is xCloud officially partnered with PgBackWeb?
No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the PgBackWeb project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source PgBackWeb project.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
