What is PgBackWeb?

PgBackWeb is a self-hosted web interface for scheduling PostgreSQL backups, written PG Back Web by upstream, which says it is becoming UFO Backup. It runs pg_dump on a schedule, shows execution logs, checks the health of databases and destinations, stores dumps locally or in S3, and lets you download backups and run restores. A self-hosted PgBackWeb is an alternative to managed database backup add-ons, with the code under AGPL-3.0, plus webhooks for finished and failed backups.

On xCloud it is PgBackWeb 0.5.2 with a private PostgreSQL 18 metadata database, both pinned by digest, on the pgbackweb_postgres and pgbackweb_backups volumes. xCloud generates the database credentials and the encryption key, and serves the app over HTTPS. Who becomes the PgBackWeb administrator?

The first person to open the site creates the administrator, and v0.5.2 enforces a single first-user bootstrap. Open the URL and create the account immediately after install, before you share the address with anyone or point a database at it.

Can you self-host PgBackWeb with Docker?

Yes. Upstream ships a Docker image, and this template is PgBackWeb Docker hosting without the setup: the 0.5.2 image and PostgreSQL 18 pinned by digest, two volumes, generated credentials and HTTPS on your own domain.

How much RAM does PgBackWeb need?

The manifest asks for 1024 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 10 GB of disk. Dump size and retention decide disk use, so size it for temporary dump space plus the backups you keep locally.

Which PostgreSQL versions does PgBackWeb support?

Upstream lists PostgreSQL 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 as supported versions. The target connection is added inside PgBackWeb with credentials you own, ideally a least-privileged user suited to backup and restore, and the server must accept this host.

Can PgBackWeb store backups in S3?

Yes. Upstream supports local storage and any number of S3 buckets as destinations. Add them inside the app; their credentials are yours, and an external bucket should be protected and versioned independently of this server.

Can I restore a backup from the PgBackWeb web interface?

Yes. Upstream lets you download or restore a backup from the web interface. A restore is only proven once you read the expected data back, so run a test restore to a spare database first.

Is PgBackWeb open source?

Yes. PgBackWeb is distributed under AGPL-3.0, so there is nothing to license. You pay for the Cloud VPS underneath, which makes this a PgBackWeb cloud of your own rather than a managed backup add-on from a database host.

How do I back up PgBackWeb itself?

Back up pgbackweb_postgres, which holds users, schedules, encrypted connection details and history, and pgbackweb_backups, which holds local archives. Keep the generated encryption key too. Nothing backs these up for you automatically, so run the copy yourself and test a restore.

How do I upgrade PgBackWeb?

The install stays on its pinned 0.5.2 image until you adopt a newer template version. Pause backup jobs, back up both volumes, read the upstream release notes, then verify login, one backup and one restore afterwards.

What happens if I change the encryption key?

PgBackWeb uses it to protect stored secrets, so a different key can make saved connection details unreadable. Leave the generated value alone and keep a copy with your volume backups so a restore can read them.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
