What is RabbitMQ?

Self-hosted RabbitMQ is an open-source message broker for reliable queuing, publish/subscribe messaging and distributed task processing. Upstream describes it as a feature rich, multi-protocol messaging and streaming broker that supports AMQP 0-9-1, AMQP 1.0, the RabbitMQ Stream Protocol, MQTT and STOMP. It is a self-hosted alternative to hosted brokers such as Amazon MQ and CloudAMQP, and the template README lists its licence as MPL 2.0.

On xCloud the template runs one container, the official rabbitmq 4.0.9 management-alpine image pinned by digest, as a single node with no separate database. The management console is published over HTTPS on your domain, while the AMQP port is published on all interfaces so workers outside the server can connect. How do I self-host RabbitMQ with Docker?

Is RabbitMQ free and open source?

Yes. RabbitMQ is open source, and the template README lists its licence as MPL 2.0, so there is no fee for the broker itself. xCloud bills for the dedicated Cloud VPS plus HTTPS and deployment, and nothing here adds a paid RabbitMQ edition or licence key.

Is RabbitMQ better than Kafka?

Neither is better in general; they are different tools. Upstream calls RabbitMQ a multi-protocol messaging and streaming broker with queues, exchanges and AMQP, MQTT and STOMP support. Choose it for task queues and routing, and look at Kafka's own page if you need a log-style platform.

Is the RabbitMQ AMQP port public?

Yes, by design. The AMQP port is published on all interfaces so workers outside the server can connect, using the host and port shown in your credentials. The management console is separate, behind HTTPS. Restrict the AMQP port with your firewall if you do not want outside clients.

How do I connect my application to RabbitMQ?

Use the AMQP host, port, username admin and generated password from your credentials panel. Client libraries for Python, Node.js, PHP, Go and Ruby connect the same way, with the server IP and the AMQP port. Check the console dashboard first to confirm the broker is running.

How do I update RabbitMQ?

Updates are deliberate. The template pins RabbitMQ 4.0.9 by immutable digest, and a catalogue re-sync affects new installs only. Before changing the image on an existing site, back up the rabbitmq_data volume, read the upstream release notes and test your queues afterwards.

How do I back up RabbitMQ?

Back up the rabbitmq_data volume, which holds Mnesia state, definitions and persisted messages. You can also export definitions with rabbitmqctl, but they cover queues, exchanges, bindings and users, not message data. Test a restore before you rely on either copy.

Who owns the data on a hosted RabbitMQ instance?

You do. Queues, messages, users and permissions live on the rabbitmq_data volume on your own Cloud VPS, and you hold the admin login. xCloud runs the server and the deployment; running the broker, its users and your backups remain your responsibility.

How much RAM does a RabbitMQ cloud server need?

The manifest asks for 512 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 2 GB of disk. The 6 GB Cloud VPS sold here gives the broker real headroom. The README notes that when RabbitMQ hits its memory limit it enters flow control and rejects new messages until memory is freed.

Can I change the admin password later?

Yes, but not through the Environment editor. RABBITMQ_DEFAULT_PASS is read only on first boot against an empty volume. Change it in the management console or with rabbitmqctl change_password inside the container, then update your applications and the environment value to match.

Can I cluster RabbitMQ nodes?

This template runs a single node and does not publish the Erlang distribution or clustering ports. A cluster cookie is generated, so you can cluster deliberately by sharing it across installations, but that is a manual setup you design and test yourself.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
