What is Shynet?

Shynet is modern, privacy-friendly, cookie-free web analytics that you host yourself. Upstream says it needs no cookie notices, collects just enough data to be useful, and tracks with a sub-kilobyte script or a 1x1 pixel when JavaScript is unavailable. It reports hits, sessions, page load time, bounce rate, duration, referrers, location, browser, operating system and device type, for several users and sites. Self-hosted Shynet is the alternative to third-party analytics under the Apache-2.0 licence.

On xCloud it is Shynet 0.14.0 as one container with SQLite, which is upstream's supported low-traffic mode. Users, services and visits sit on the shynet_data volume. Upstream says Shynet suits personal projects and small to medium sites and has not been tested with ultra-high traffic, and it also supports PostgreSQL and distributed workers for larger setups.

Can you self-host Shynet with Docker?

Yes. Upstream is intended to be self-hosted and can run as a single Docker container on a small VPS, and this template is Shynet Docker hosting set up for you: one image pinned by digest, a shynet_data volume, generated secrets and HTTPS. It is your own Shynet cloud analytics.

How much RAM does Shynet need?

The template requires 1 vCPU with 1024 MB RAM and 2 GB storage. The 6 GB plan is the entry rung here. The SQLite setup suits small deployments, so watch database growth and ingestion as your sites gain traffic.

Is Shynet free?

Yes, Shynet carries the Apache-2.0 licence and no software fee. The one charge is the dedicated Cloud VPS, cancellable whenever you wish. Visit data stays in a SQLite file on a volume that you control.

Does Shynet use cookies?

No. Upstream describes Shynet as cookie-free, so it needs no intrusive cookie notices for analytics. It identifies sessions without setting cookies and collects just enough data to be useful. Check your own legal obligations, because rules differ by region and use.

Does Shynet work without JavaScript?

Yes. Upstream says it falls back to a 1x1 transparent tracking pixel when JavaScript is not available, and its tracking script weighs less than a kilobyte. Because you host Shynet yourself, it also tends not to appear on ad-block lists.

How much traffic can Shynet handle?

The 1 GiB SQLite topology is for small, low-traffic deployments. Measure ingestion rate, database growth and SQLite contention before relying on it for more. Upstream supports PostgreSQL and distributed workers for larger workloads, but this template does not set those up.

How do I change the Shynet administrator password?

From Shynet's account settings. The displayed password is bootstrap-only, so changing it inside Shynet needs no environment change. Sign in with the administrator email and the generated password first, then rotate it, as nothing in the environment keeps it in sync.

Why must DJANGO_SECRET_KEY stay the same in Shynet?

It signs sessions, so changing it signs everyone out and can invalidate stored session data. Keep the generated value stable across redeploys and back it up together with the shynet_data volume, because a restore needs both the database and the same secret.

How do I back up Shynet?

Back up the shynet_data volume, which holds the SQLite database with users, services, visits and the bootstrap marker, together with DJANGO_SECRET_KEY. Take the copy with writes quiesced or the container stopped, and test a restore on a spare install first.

How do I upgrade Shynet?

The install stays on pinned 0.14.0 until you adopt a newer template version. Back up the volume and the secret, read the upstream release notes and migrations, then redeploy and check sign-in and a service. Existing sites are never upgraded automatically.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
