What is Grafana?

Grafana is a self-hosted observability and dashboard platform, and self-hosted Grafana is an open-source way to query, visualize and alert on your metrics no matter where they are stored. Its README lists dashboards with template variables, ad-hoc exploration of metrics and logs, alert rules that notify systems such as Slack, PagerDuty and OpsGenie, and mixed data sources in one graph. It is distributed under AGPL-3.0-only.

What is Grafana used for?

Is Grafana free?

Yes. Grafana is distributed under AGPL-3.0-only, with Apache-2.0 exceptions listed in LICENSING.md, and the licence file is linked from this page at the pinned v12.4.0 tag. xCloud bills for the Cloud VPS under it, not for Grafana itself, and nothing is charged per seat.

Can I self-host Grafana with Docker?

Yes, and this Grafana Docker hosting template does it for you. It runs the grafana/grafana:12.4 container with a grafana_data volume, so it needs a Docker server: choose Docker as the server type, open One Click Apps, pick Grafana, add your domain and deploy.

How much RAM does Grafana need?

The template manifest asks for 512 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 2 GB of disk as a floor. Grafana queries your data rather than storing it, so what grows is the number of dashboards, users and alert rules. This page sells the 6 GB tier, which leaves room for data sources beside it.

What data sources does Grafana support?

Grafana's README says you can mix data sources in one graph, and this template's own notes name Prometheus, Loki and MySQL as examples to add under Connections, Data sources. Elasticsearch, InfluxDB and PostgreSQL are among its other built-in data sources. Data sources are configured per instance, and you can pick one per query.

What is the difference between Grafana OSS and Grafana Cloud?

This page covers the open-source Grafana server running on your own xCloud Cloud VPS, with the data on your own volume. Grafana Cloud is a separate service from Grafana's vendor, and no affiliation with it, or with Grafana Labs, is claimed. You manage upgrades and backups of this install yourself.

How do I upgrade Grafana?

Upgrades are not automatic. The 12.4 tag follows patch releases inside minor 12.4, and existing installs are unaffected by template changes. To move across minor versions, wait for a newer template version, back up the grafana_data volume, then install it. Read Grafana's upgrade notes first.

Where does Grafana store its data and dashboards?

On the grafana_data volume, mounted at /var/lib/grafana: dashboards, data source configs, users, alert rules, plugins and Grafana's internal SQLite database. Include that volume in your backup, since it is the one place your Grafana configuration lives. Your metrics stay in their own data sources.

Backup and restore Docker apps

Is Grafana a replacement for Datadog?

They overlap in purpose but differ in model. Datadog is a separate hosted product, while Grafana queries data stored elsewhere and runs on your own server. This page makes no feature-parity claim, so check that your data sources and alerting needs are covered before you switch.

Can Grafana send alerts to Slack?

Yes. Grafana's README says it continuously evaluates alert rules and sends notifications to systems such as Slack, PagerDuty, VictorOps and OpsGenie. For email, invites and password resets, add the SMTP settings in the Environment editor and use Save & Redeploy to apply them.

How do I sign in the first time?

Open your HTTPS URL and sign in with the admin username and password from the install form, generated at 24 characters if you left the password blank. Public sign-up is off by default, so add people under Administration, Users, and change the bootstrap password after your first login.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
