What is Specifically Clementines?

Specifically Clementines (formerly "Groceries") is an open-source, self-hosted grocery list app built around reliable sync. Lists are shared between family members and devices, and an item added or checked off on one phone shows up on the others in real time.

It keeps working offline and syncs when the connection returns, supports multiple lists grouped into list groups, a store view sorted by category (aisle), and recipes whose items can be added to a list at once.

How do I sign in?

Use the owner username and the generated owner password from the installation credentials. The install creates this account for you; every account is a regular user, as there is no in-app administrator.

What runs alongside the web app?

A small sign-in API and a CouchDB database that every device syncs with. Each is published over HTTPS on its own domain, and all three must stay reachable from the devices that use the app.

Why does the install use three domains?

The web app, the sign-in API and the CouchDB database each get an address. Devices sign in through the API and then sync lists directly with the database domain, which is also the one every device stores when it signs in.

Can family members join?

Yes. Set DISABLE_ACCOUNT_CREATION=false in the Environment editor and redeploy, let them choose Create account, then set it back to true and redeploy.

Can strangers create accounts?

No. Public registration is closed after install, and sign-ups were rejected in QA.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Lists stay usable without a connection and sync when the device is back online.

Is the CouchDB admin console exposed?

The database domain serves the CouchDB admin console at /_utils, protected by the CouchDB admin user and password from the installation credentials, which are separate from your app account. Keep them private; you can add Basic Authentication for that domain as an extra barrier.

What should I back up?

The couchdb_data volume together with the generated environment values. The token key in them signs every sign-in, so losing it signs everyone out.

Backups in xCloud

Do password-reset emails work?

Password-reset and registration emails need the SMTP settings listed in the Environment editor. Without them, signing in still works.

Does xCloud automatically back up or update Specifically Clementines?

No. The template pins version 1.1.9 by immutable digest; new installations use the pinned release, existing sites are not automatically upgraded. Back up first, read the upstream release notes, then bump the image tags and digests together on your own schedule. Server-level backups and snapshots are available on every Cloud VPS.

What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?

The template's baseline asks for 1 CPU core, 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of disk; measured idle use in QA was about 180 MiB across the three containers. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung, with real headroom above that baseline.

What survives a restart?

Lists, recipes and accounts live on the couchdb_data volume. In QA, all three containers were restarted and the list and item were still present after sync.

Is xCloud officially partnered with Specifically Clementines?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Specifically Clementines project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source project.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
