What is Spliit?

Spliit is a free and open source alternative to Splitwise, according to its README. You create a group and share it with friends, add expenses with a description, split them evenly or unevenly, assign a category, see group balances and record reimbursements, and use it as a Progressive Web App. A self-hosted Spliit keeps that expense data in a database you run, under the MIT licence.

On xCloud the template runs Spliit 1.23.1 with a private PostgreSQL 17.6, both pinned by digest, with only Spliit published over HTTPS. Spliit has no accounts, so the unguessable group link is the only credential and xCloud cannot recover a lost one. Groups, expenses and history sit on the spliit_db volume. Receipt scanning and document uploads are off, because they need separate OpenAI and S3 services.

Is Spliit free?

Yes. Spliit is MIT licensed, with no per-group or per-member charge. You pay for the Cloud VPS running the app and its PostgreSQL, and expense data takes very little space, so the server easily hosts other apps too.

How much RAM does Spliit need?

The manifest asks for 1 CPU core, 1024 MB of RAM and 10 GB of disk, because Spliit and PostgreSQL run together. The 6 GB plan leaves plenty of headroom for a handful of groups and for other apps on the server.

Can you self-host Spliit with Docker?

Yes, and this template is Spliit Docker hosting without the setup: the official 1.23.1 image and PostgreSQL 17.6, both pinned by digest, a generated database password, one data volume and HTTPS on your domain. PostgreSQL has no published port.

Does Spliit have accounts or a login?

No. Spliit has no account system, so there is no administrator and no password. Each group has its own unguessable link, which grants access to that group, so share links only with the people who should see the expenses.

What happens if I lose a Spliit group link?

It cannot be recovered from xCloud or from Spliit itself, so save every group's link somewhere secure straight after creating it. Restoring a database backup restores the group identifiers, and so access through previously saved links.

Does Spliit support receipt scanning?

Not in this template. Upstream lists creating an expense by scanning a receipt and attaching images, but those features need separately managed OpenAI and S3 services, so receipt scanning and document uploads are disabled here.

Can I set a default currency in Spliit?

Yes. The install form asks for a default ISO 4217 currency code, USD by default, which is preselected for new groups. It is not a lock, because each group can choose its own currency when it is created.

How do I back up Spliit?

Back up the spliit_db volume, which holds groups, participants, expenses, balances and activity history. The application container is replaceable. Treat backups as sensitive, since restoring one restores access through saved group links, so keep copies somewhere private.

How do I upgrade Spliit?

The install stays on Spliit 1.23.1 and PostgreSQL 17.6 until you adopt a newer template version. Back up spliit_db, read the release notes and the Prisma migration behaviour, and test on a restored copy. Nothing upgrades the app automatically.

Is there a Spliit cloud service I can use?

Upstream runs an official instance at Spliit.app. This page is your own Spliit cloud instead: a dedicated Cloud VPS running the open-source app, with your groups on a volume of your own, reachable only through links you share.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
