What is Traccar?

Traccar is an open-source GPS tracking system whose Java back end supports a wide range of GPS protocols and tracking devices and is used with any major SQL database. It offers real-time tracking, driver behaviour monitoring, reports, geofencing and alarms, plus a REST API, a web app and mobile apps. Run on your own server it is a self-hosted Traccar, a Samsara alternative whose positions stay on your own server, under the Apache-2.0 licence.

On xCloud it is one container, traccar/traccar 6.15.3-alpine pinned by digest, with Traccar's embedded H2 database for a small installation on the traccar_data and traccar_logs volumes. The web UI is served over HTTPS, and only the OsmAnd-compatible device port is published, so other device protocols are not reachable.

Can I run Traccar in Docker?

Yes, and this template is Traccar Docker hosting without the compose file: the traccar/traccar 6.15.3-alpine image pinned by digest, one container, the traccar_data and traccar_logs volumes and an HTTPS route to port 8082. Upstream documents its Docker image at traccar.org/docker.

What ports does Traccar use?

Two are exposed here. The web UI and API on container port 8082 sit behind xCloud's HTTPS on your domain. The OsmAnd-compatible device endpoint on container port 5055 is published on one allocated public TCP port over plain HTTP, so restrict it with your firewall.

How do I add a GPS device to Traccar?

Create the device in the web app and use its unique identifier when sending data. For an OsmAnd or compatible HTTP client, use the server IP and the allocated OsmAnd port from the credentials. Other device protocols are not published by this template.

Which GPS trackers work with Traccar?

Upstream says its back end supports a very wide range of GPS protocols and tracker models. This template publishes only the OsmAnd-compatible HTTP port, so only devices and apps that can send over that protocol work out of the box.

Can I use my phone as a Traccar tracker?

Yes. The OsmAnd protocol was originally used by the OsmAnd mobile app and was later adopted and extended by Traccar's own Client apps, so either can send to the endpoint. Create a device first and use its identifier.

How much RAM does Traccar need?

Traccar's manifest floor is 2048 MB of RAM, 2 CPU cores and 10 GB of disk. The embedded database suits a small installation, so size the server from measured retention and reporting load as fleets grow. This page sells the 6 GB tier.

Which database does Traccar use?

This template uses Traccar's embedded H2 database, on the traccar_data volume, which suits a small installation. Upstream says Traccar can be used with any major SQL database, but the template configures no external database, so moving to one is your own migration.

Is Traccar free?

Yes. Traccar is open-source software under the Apache-2.0 licence, so the server costs nothing to run. Your plan pays for the dedicated Cloud VPS underneath. Any SMS gateway or map service you connect may have its own cost.

How do I back up Traccar?

Stop Traccar, then back up the traccar_data and traccar_logs volumes together. The data volume holds the embedded database and the init-once marker, and the logs volume helps diagnose device connections. Nothing schedules the backup; restore both together.

How do I upgrade Traccar?

Nothing upgrades itself: 6.15.3 is pinned by digest. Read the upstream release and schema migration notes, stop Traccar and back up both volumes, then adopt a newer template version when one is published. Verify administrator login, a device position and reports afterwards.

Is this a Traccar cloud service?

It is Traccar on a dedicated Cloud VPS under your xCloud login, a Traccar cloud of your own at your domain. ADMIN_EMAIL and ADMIN_PASSWORD create the administrator only once, so rotate the password later from Traccar Settings.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
