OwnTracks Recorder hosting on xCloud lets you deploy OwnTracks Recorder and run a location history server for your phone on your own domain, with a built-in web map, track view and REST API. xCloud runs the digest-pinned Recorder 1.0.4 behind an nginx gateway with a generated Basic Auth login, mounts a persistent volume and publishes it over HTTPS. Phones post over HTTP, so no MQTT broker is needed.
The OwnTracks Recorder is a lightweight program for storing and accessing location data published by the OwnTracks apps for iOS and Android. Upstream describes it as a compiled program that is easy to operate on low-end hardware: it receives points by MQTT or HTTP POST, stores them in plain files, and serves them through a built-in REST API, with an ocat command-line utility for reading them back. A self-hosted OwnTracks Recorder is a location history server you own, under GPL-2.0-or-later.
On xCloud the template runs Recorder 1.0.4 HTTP-only, with no MQTT broker, behind an nginx gateway pinned by digest. The Recorder has no authentication of its own, so the gateway puts a generated Basic Auth login on the web map, the API, the websocket and /pub. Stored points, last-known files and the geo-cache sit on the owntracks_store volume.
Self-hosting OwnTracks Recorder normally means wiring up the Recorder container, an nginx gateway, a Basic Auth layer and a TLS certificate before your phone can post a single location. This is the same result without assembling any of it.
Step 01
Create your xCloud account and pick OwnTracks Recorder from the OneClick catalog, then choose a domain. The gateway username is owntracks, and xCloud generates a 32-character password for you.
Step 02
One click. We provision the server, bring up the digest-pinned Recorder container behind a digest-pinned nginx gateway, publish it over HTTPS, and lock every path — web, API and /pub — behind Basic Auth.
Step 03
Save the gateway login from your installation credentials, open the HTTPS URL, then point the OwnTracks mobile app at it in HTTP mode with the same login to start sending locations.
OwnTracks Recorder runs in full here — the open-source app is complete, and your location history sits on infrastructure you control, not a third-party tracking service.
Keep personal or family location history on a server you control instead of handing it to a third-party tracking service.
Receive locations from the OwnTracks iOS and Android apps over plain HTTP(S) posts to /pub — there is no MQTT broker to run or maintain.
Browse stored points on a built-in map, a track view and a table view, or query the same data through the REST API.
The Recorder has no authentication of its own, so every path — the web UI, the API, /pub and the websocket — sits behind a generated Basic Auth login.
The verified install used roughly 8 MiB of RAM at idle, so it runs comfortably on the smallest tier with plenty of room to spare.
Stored location files, last-known-location files and the geo-cache all live on a persistent volume that kept its data through a restart during verification.
Managed hosting for OwnTracks Recorder, so the gateway, the uptime and the HTTPS are not your problem.
Phones running the OwnTracks app send points to your own domain, and the history stays in plain files on a volume you control.
Open the built-in map, track and table views to review stored points for a user and device without installing anything else.
Pull stored data through the REST API behind the gateway login, for a home dashboard or a personal report.
Receive HTTP posts at /pub with no MQTT broker to run, secure or keep patched.

xCloud works really well, I am surprised by its performance being this the release version, I have tried many paid platforms such as runcloud, cloudpages or serveravatar, as well as free platforms such as CyberPanel, CloudPanel or Hestia Control Panel and direct competitors such as SpinupWP and FlyWP. Of all those that I have tried, the platform that works best for WordPress is SpinupWP and I believe that xCloud can reach and surpass that development, its roadmap is promising. Congratulations to the xCloud team, I hope they become the leading platform in the segment, it has all the potential to achieve it!
Brian GeovannyI've been with runcloud for the last 3 years. However, after trying xcloud for the last month, I'm switching over. They are on a roll with their setup.
Kevin PinedaI'm moving my servers to xCloud, a cloud control panel by M Asif Rahman and the WPDeveloper team. Their roadmap looks interesting and no, there are no team mates nor API limits with xCloud! #xCloud #wordpress #hosting
Leo KooHow Cloud Nine Web Elevated Client Experience While Streamlining Hosting Operations using xCloud
Ed EllinghamxCloud is like having an expert server team on call — without the big agency costs. It's given me back my time and given my clients peace of mind. Highly recommended for freelancers and small teams who want reliable performance and security.
Dumitru ButucelxCloud isn't just a solution. It's like one of that friend who got your back when you screw things up pretty bad.
Waqar AhmedTrust me when I say, once people explore the potential of xCloud they gonna switch from other panels, just keep delivering the best tech, lots of love for the team 😍😍
Rahul SinghSo far my experience has been smooth like silk. I didn't imagine that configuring and managing a VPS would be so easy. As of today, I have deployed 8 sites. The support is good, and they treat users with respect, even if they ask stupid questions (myself included). For the future, I hope for greater flexibility in scheduled backups and more comprehensive and consistent documentation. I'm sure that within a few months, xCloud will become the leader in its segment. This community is amazing, and the Staff here is super helpful.
Massimo VillaCame from cloudways then to runcloud then to xcloud. Looks like I'm staying here.
Gerson ElI've recently taken all of my Vultr-hosted sites and gotten rid of cPanel for them to substitute it with xCloud. I have to say, I'm really impressed with xCloud so far! The interface is definitely the standout feature for me.
Tony LewisI came from Cloudways and won't go back. Highly impressed with xCloud. Glad I gave them a chance.
Jared McDowellI like xCloud better than RunCloud, but one thing I'll point out is that some years ago RunCloud was hungry for business, the support was outstanding, and the community was active and helped each other. Maybe it was sold, there was a change in management, or they stopped being hungry, but the quality of the RunCloud offering declined and it hasn't been moving forward quickly. My point is that currently the xCloud team has the edge and it is theirs to keep or lose
David McCanHow Kevin Heinrichs Cut Hosting Costs by 84% While Running WooCommerce & Node.js Sites Efficiently
Kevin HeinrichsI had 150 sites on cloudways and am in the process of moving them to xcloud. Much faster and better priced.
Dan SpinozaDear xCloud Team, I have been using xCloud for some time now and am genuinely impressed with its capabilities and the flexibility it offers by allowing users to bring their own VPS for management. It's a fantastic service, and my experience so far has been very positive. Successful migrated 5 sites on a single server. Xcloud migration tool worked great. There were few hiccups with security plugin like MalCare but disabling the plugin prior to migration worked just fine.

No. The Recorder has no built-in authentication, so this install puts an nginx Basic Auth gateway in front of the web map, the API, the websocket and the /pub endpoint. Requests with a missing or wrong password are refused.
In the OwnTracks app set Mode to HTTP, set the URL to https://your-domain/pub, turn Authentication on and enter the gateway username and password, then set a User ID and Device ID. Those two names label your data.
Upstream supports MQTT and HTTP, but this install runs HTTP-only, so locations arrive as HTTP posts from the app. The no-MQTT and listen-address settings ship as they are, and changing them stops the Recorder from starting.
Yes, and this template is OwnTracks Recorder Docker hosting without the wiring: the owntracks/recorder 1.0.4 image pinned by digest behind a pinned nginx gateway, a generated login, the owntracks_store volume and HTTPS on your domain.
Yes. It is released under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or any later version, with some bundled components under their own terms. xCloud charges for the dedicated Cloud VPS and the management around it, not for an OwnTracks licence.
The manifest asks for 512 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 5 GB of disk, and QA saw only about 8 MiB at idle. Disk grows with every stored point. The 6 GB plan leaves plenty of room for other apps on the server.
Back up the owntracks_store volume, which holds the stored location files, last-known-location files and geo-cache, plus the gateway password kept in the Environment editor. Nothing schedules the copy, so run it yourself and check that a restore opens on the map.
The install stays on Recorder 1.0.4 until you adopt a newer template version. Copy owntracks_store first and read the upstream release notes. A redeploy keeps the volume and your stored history, and nothing upgrades the app by itself, so you choose the moment.
Not fully. The Recorder container runs as root, which is the stock image default, and a non-JSON POST to /pub returns 200 because that is how upstream behaves. Only the gateway is published, behind the login, and you can restrict access further.

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
