What is Unleash?

Unleash is an open-source solution for feature management. Upstream says it lets teams deploy code to production in small steps and control how and when features reach users, with feature flags that let you test code with real production data and work on several features without separate branches. It lists 15 official client and server SDKs. Self-hosted Unleash is the alternative to a hosted feature flag service, under the AGPL-3.0 licence for the open source edition.

On xCloud it is Unleash Open Source 8.1.0 with PostgreSQL 16.10, both pinned by digest, on the unleash_postgres_data volume. Unleash Enterprise features such as SSO and enterprise change management are not included. The generated administrator password replaces the default in upstream's docker compose demo, and only Unleash itself is published, with PostgreSQL kept private.

Can you self-host Unleash with Docker?

Yes. Upstream's open source setup is a docker compose project, and this template is Unleash Docker hosting already assembled: the 8.1.0 server and PostgreSQL pinned by digest, one data volume, a generated admin and HTTPS. It is your own Unleash cloud feature flag service.

How much RAM does Unleash need?

The template requires 1024 MB of RAM, one CPU core and 10 GB of disk for Unleash alongside PostgreSQL. Plans here start at 6 GB, which leaves headroom beside the database as projects and flags grow.

Is Unleash free?

Unleash Open Source is AGPL-3.0 software with no fee, and this template runs the unmodified official image. The Cloud VPS is billed, cancellable any time. Vendor Enterprise plans are a separate product, with their own pricing from the vendor.

How do I sign in to Unleash the first time?

xCloud generates a 32-character initial administrator password at install, shown once in your Credentials panel with the Site URL and the fixed username admin. Sign in with it, then change the password from inside Unleash. Upstream's demo password does not apply.

Does this Unleash template include Enterprise features?

No. It ships Unleash Open Source only, under AGPL-3.0. Enterprise features such as SSO and SAML or enterprise change management are not included. If you need them, they belong to the vendor's separate Enterprise plans.

How do I connect an SDK to Unleash?

Create a project and a feature flag in the dashboard, then issue a scoped API token for the environment your application runs in. Use that token with an official server-side or frontend SDK for your language, and never share administrator credentials with applications.

How do I change the Unleash admin password?

The generated password only initialises the first administrator on first boot into an empty database, so editing the environment value afterwards does not rotate the live account. Sign in and change the password from user administration, then update the environment value to match.

How do I back up Unleash?

Back up the unleash_postgres_data volume, which holds users, projects, flags, strategies, environments, API-token metadata and every other piece of configuration. It is the only place Unleash's state lives. Use a PostgreSQL-consistent method and test a restore before an upgrade.

How do I upgrade Unleash?

The install stays on pinned 8.1.0 and PostgreSQL 16.10 until you adopt a newer template version. Back up unleash_postgres_data, study upstream's release notes, then redeploy and toggle a flag to confirm an SDK still sees it. Nothing upgrades automatically.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
