What is Wastebin?

Wastebin is a minimal pastebin, with a design that upstream says was shamelessly copied from bin. It supports syntax highlighting, Markdown rendering, expiration, burn-after-reading, QR codes, anonymous owner deletion and optional per-paste password encryption. A self-hosted Wastebin is MIT licensed. It has no user accounts and no administrator interface by design, which keeps it small.

On xCloud the template runs Wastebin 3.7.2 from the vendor image, pinned by digest, with the SQLite database on the wastebin_data volume and a generated signing key and password salt. Anyone who can reach the URL can create pastes, and paste passwords protect a paste's content rather than the service. Upstream warns it offers no comprehensive denial-of-service mitigation, so restrict access at the edge for public use.

Is Wastebin free?

Yes. Wastebin is MIT licensed, so the paste service has no fee from the project. You pay for the Cloud VPS, and since the service is lightweight, retention periods and request volume matter more than raw size.

How much RAM does Wastebin need?

The manifest asks for 1 CPU core, 256 MB of RAM and 2 GB of disk, because Wastebin is a small Rust service with SQLite. The 6 GB plan is far above that, and storage depends on how many pastes you keep.

Can you self-host Wastebin with Docker?

Yes, and this template is Wastebin Docker hosting without the setup: the 3.7.2 image pinned by digest running as an unprivileged user, a one-time volume initializer, a generated signing key and salt, the wastebin_data volume and HTTPS.

Does Wastebin have user accounts or an admin login?

No. Wastebin intentionally has no accounts and no administrator credentials, so anyone who can reach the URL can create pastes. A per-paste password encrypts that paste's content but does not restrict access to the service.

Is it safe to make Wastebin public?

Only with care. Upstream warns Wastebin has no comprehensive denial-of-service mitigation and should not be exposed publicly as-is. Use access restrictions and rate limiting at the edge, set practical retention, and avoid pasting secrets or customer data.

Can I password-protect a Wastebin paste?

Yes, when you create it. The optional paste password encrypts that paste's content, and the password salt is needed for compatibility, so keep it stable. It does not make the Wastebin site itself private, so anyone with the page address can still add pastes.

How do I back up Wastebin?

Back up the wastebin_data volume, which holds state.db, together with WASTEBIN_SIGNING_KEY and WASTEBIN_PASSWORD_SALT from the Environment editor, and restore all three together. Test the restore with a non-sensitive paste, and keep the copy off the server as well.

How do I upgrade Wastebin?

The install stays on Wastebin 3.7.2 until you adopt a newer template version. Back up the volume and the stable environment values, read the upstream release notes and recreate the containers without deleting the volume. Never use docker compose down -v.

What survives a restart in Wastebin?

Everything on wastebin_data, because it is a persistent named volume, so existing pastes are kept. The signing key preserves owner-cookie and deletion behaviour, which is why the key must stay the same across restarts and any later redeploys.

Is there a Wastebin cloud service I can use?

This page is your own Wastebin cloud: a dedicated Cloud VPS running the open-source paste service, with pastes on a volume of your own. It is a private instance rather than a shared public site, and you choose how widely to share the link.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
