What is WhoDB?

WhoDB is a lightweight, self-hosted workspace for databases. Upstream describes one place to explore your databases, edit data, run queries and understand how a schema fits together, running in the browser and available as a desktop app or CLI too. A self-hosted WhoDB is an alternative to installing a heavyweight desktop database client on every machine, released under Apache-2.0, with a live demo and video walkthrough upstream.

On xCloud it is the WhoDB Community Edition 0.127.0, pinned by digest, as one container with sessions encrypted in the persistent /data volume using a generated key. xCloud serves the web interface over HTTPS. It authenticates with the credentials of the database you connect to, and it does not host or back up that database.

How do I sign in to WhoDB?

Sign in with credentials for a database that this server can reach. WhoDB authenticates sessions using the database credentials you supply, and the template generates no login of its own. Allow this server's address on the database firewall first.

Does WhoDB store my database credentials?

Session credentials are encrypted in the persistent /data volume with a generated encryption key. Keep that key stable, because changing it invalidates saved sessions. xCloud never generates or stores credentials for your actual data sources.

Which databases can WhoDB connect to?

Upstream describes SQL, NoSQL and cloud data sources. This template publishes only the WhoDB web interface, so connect it to databases reachable from the container network and permitted for this deployment, and use least-privilege accounts.

Can you self-host WhoDB with Docker?

Yes. Upstream runs from a Docker image, and this template is WhoDB Docker hosting with HTTPS added: the Community Edition 0.127.0 image pinned by digest, a data volume and your own domain, so there is no Compose file for you to write.

How much RAM does WhoDB need?

The manifest asks for 1024 MB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 10 GB of disk. WhoDB is lightweight, and the 6 GB plan leaves ample room for other apps on the same server, since WhoDB runs as one container.

Does WhoDB use AI?

Optionally. Upstream can connect Ollama, OpenAI, Anthropic, LM Studio or another OpenAI-compatible provider to answer questions in plain English. The template configures none, and enabling one sends your questions to that provider, so choose carefully and review its terms.

Is WhoDB open source?

Yes. WhoDB is released under Apache-2.0, so there is no licence fee for the Community Edition. You pay only for the Cloud VPS, which gives you a WhoDB cloud of your own instead of a hosted explorer.

Is it safe to put WhoDB on the internet?

It can edit live data, so treat the URL as sensitive. Add Basic Auth or an IP allowlist at your proxy as a second gate, use read-only database accounts where you can, and never reuse an administrator login.

How do I back up WhoDB?

Back up the WhoDB data volume, which holds only its own encrypted session metadata, together with the encryption key. It does not contain your connected databases, which need their own backups. Nothing backs it up automatically.

How do I upgrade WhoDB?

The install stays on its pinned 0.127.0 image until you adopt a newer template version. Back up the data volume first and read the upstream release notes. Nothing upgrades automatically, and keep the encryption key unchanged so saved sessions stay valid.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
