What is Convex?

Convex is a reactive backend: a document database with TypeScript server functions, file storage, scheduled jobs, HTTP actions and live queries. Your client libraries talk to one backend, and queries stay up to date as the data changes.

Upstream publishes a self-hosted build of the backend and a web dashboard. This template runs both from the official images at commit a3538c6, with the default SQLite storage kept in a persistent volume.

Generate An Admin Key And Deploy
Generate an admin key on the server with the command shown after install, then sign in on the dashboard domain. In your project, set CONVEX_SELF_HOSTED_URL to your backend API URL and CONVEX_SELF_HOSTED_ADMIN_KEY to that key, and run npx convex deploy.

What makes this different from Convex Cloud?

You run the open-source backend yourself on your xCloud server, with your own data volume.

How do I sign in to the dashboard?

There is no sign-up. Generate an admin key on the server with the command shown after install, then enter it on the dashboard domain.

How do I deploy my functions?

In your project, set CONVEX_SELF_HOSTED_URL to your backend API URL and CONVEX_SELF_HOSTED_ADMIN_KEY to the admin key, then run npx convex deploy. Client libraries connect to the backend API URL.

What runs alongside Convex?

The backend (API and HTTP actions) and the dashboard, as two containers. There is no separate database service; the default storage is a SQLite file in the convex_data volume.

Which domains does the install use?

Three: the backend API (primary), the HTTP actions endpoint and the dashboard. The backend API and HTTP actions domains are baked into stored file URLs and action callbacks, so treat them as permanent. The dashboard domain can change.

Who can call my functions?

Public functions you deploy are callable by anyone who can reach the backend API domain, so enforce authorization inside your functions. The admin key grants full read and write access; keep it private.

What should I back up?

The convex_data volume, which holds the SQLite database, uploaded files and instance credentials. Back it up with the backend stopped, or take a snapshot with npx convex export.

What happens if I change the instance name or secret?

Changing either invalidates every admin key and CLI login, so keep them stable.

What is the licence?

FSL-1.1-Apache-2.0, which is source-available and converts to Apache 2.0 after two years. Running it for your own applications is permitted; offering a competing hosted Convex service is not.

Does xCloud automatically back up or update Convex?

No. The template pins the official images by immutable digest; existing sites are not automatically upgraded. Read the upstream release notes, then bump the image tag and digest together on your own schedule. Server-level backups and snapshots are available on every Cloud VPS.

What are the server requirements, and why does this page sell 6 GB?

The template's baseline asks for 1 CPU core, 512 MB of RAM and 10 GB of disk; measured use in QA was roughly 250-320 MiB. This page sells the 6 GB tier as the entry rung, with real headroom above that baseline.

What survives a restart?

Data on the convex_data volume survived a restart in verification, because it is a persistent named volume.

Is xCloud officially partnered with Convex?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Convex project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the self-hosted Convex backend.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
