What is Gramps Web?

Is Gramps Web free?

Yes — it is free and open source under the GNU Affero General Public License v3 (AGPL-3.0). What you pay xCloud for is the dedicated server it runs on and the management around it, not the application itself.

Can I self-host Gramps Web?

Yes — that is exactly what this template deploys. It brings up the official Gramps Web 26.8.0 image for both the web app and its background worker, plus a private Valkey 8 service, all pinned by immutable digest, mounts eight persistent volumes and publishes it over HTTPS on your domain in minutes instead of assembled by hand.

How do I sign in and create an owner account?

There is no default or generated owner credential — none is shipped. Open your HTTPS URL after installation and create the first owner account yourself through Gramps Web's own first-run assistant.

What does xCloud configure automatically?

The Gramps Web URL, the background worker, a private Valkey service for task queues and rate limiting, all eight persistent volumes, the domain and the HTTPS route. Only Gramps Web's interface is published through xCloud-managed HTTPS — Valkey stays private to the internal network.

Can I import research I already have?

Yes. Start a new tree through the first-run assistant, or import an existing Gramps XML (.gramps) archive to bring in research you've already done.

Does outbound email work out of the box?

No. This template configures no SMTP transport. Configure an approved authenticated mail service inside Gramps Web only if registration or notification email is required.

What should I back up?

All eight volumes together, from the same maintenance window: gramps_users, gramps_db, gramps_media, gramps_index, gramps_thumb_cache, gramps_cache, gramps_secret and gramps_tmp. A partial restore can leave accounts, tree records, media and search data inconsistent with each other. Keep gramps_secret stable for the life of the installation.

Backups in xCloud

Does xCloud automatically back up or update Gramps Web?

No. The template pins Gramps Web 26.8.0 and Valkey 8 by immutable digest; a catalog re-sync affects new installations only. Review upstream release notes, take a coordinated backup of all eight volumes, then verify owner login, a representative record and background jobs before changing either pinned image.

What are the server requirements?

The template manifest asks for 2 GB of RAM, two CPU cores and 10 GB of disk as a floor. This page sells the 6 GB tier, comfortable headroom above that floor for the worker and Valkey running alongside the application — leave extra disk beyond the floor for media and exports.

What survives a restart?

Everything on all eight persistent volumes, because each is a named volume. Restarting the containers does not touch your owner account, tree records, media, search index or secret material.

Is xCloud officially partnered with Gramps Web?

No. No official partnership or endorsement between xCloud and the Gramps project has been verified. This is a deployment and server-management option for the open-source Gramps Web project.

Can I run other apps on the same server?

Yes. It is a dedicated Cloud VPS, not a locked appliance, so you can deploy other OneClick apps or your own sites beside it as long as the resources are there.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
