What is Gramps Web?

Self-hosted Gramps Web is a free and open source web app for browsing and collaboratively editing genealogical databases. Upstream describes it as a companion to the Gramps desktop application, with family tree charts, interactive maps, advanced search, an integrated blog, DNA and chromosome tools, and bi-directional sync with Gramps Desktop. It is an alternative to a hosted genealogy service such as Ancestry, and it is AGPL-3.0 licensed.

On xCloud the template runs ghcr.io/gramps-project/grampsweb 26.8.0, pinned by digest, as a web service and a Celery worker, with a private Valkey service for task queues, results and rate limiting. Eight named volumes hold accounts, the family-tree database, media, the search index, thumbnails, caches, secret material and temporary work. The first-run assistant creates the owner account.

Can I run Gramps Web with Docker?

Yes, and this template is Gramps Web Docker hosting without the assembly. It runs the official 26.8.0 image, pinned by digest, as a web service and a Celery worker beside a private Valkey service, with the web port proxied behind HTTPS on your domain.

How much RAM does Gramps Web need?

Can family members edit the tree?

Yes, that is the collaborative design. Upstream describes sharing and collaborating with family members, and its demo shows owner, editor, contributor and member accounts. You create the owner in the first-run assistant, then set up the other accounts and decide what each role may change.

Does Gramps Web support GEDCOM?

The template documents import of a Gramps XML file in the first-run assistant, and says nothing about GEDCOM. This page therefore makes no GEDCOM claim. If you hold GEDCOM files, check the upstream documentation for your version before planning the move.

Who can see my family tree?

Upstream lists privacy controls as a design priority. The template creates the owner account in the first-run assistant, and you add other accounts and roles from there. Review what each role can see before you invite relatives, especially for records about living people.

How do I back up Gramps Web?

Back up all eight named volumes together: gramps_users, gramps_db, gramps_media, gramps_index, gramps_thumb_cache, gramps_cache, gramps_secret and gramps_tmp. A partial restore can leave accounts, tree records, media and secret material inconsistent. Keep gramps_secret stable, and test a restore before relying on it.

How do I update Gramps Web?

Your install stays on its pinned 26.8.0 version until you adopt a newer template version. Back up all eight volumes first and read the upstream release notes. After the update, check owner login, a person and media record, background jobs and that data survives a restart.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
