What is HFS?

HFS is the HTTP File Server, an open-source tool released under the GPL-3.0 licence for sharing files through a web browser. Upstream lists a virtual file system that lets you share a single file under a different name, accounts, resumable uploads and downloads, folders downloaded as zip archives, search, real-time monitoring, plug-ins and an admin web interface. Self-hosted HFS is an alternative to a hosted drive such as Dropbox for people who want to decide exactly which folders are exposed and to whom.

On xCloud the template runs the upstream rejetto/hfs v0.56.0 image, pinned by digest, as one container with a single persistent volume, hfs_data, for configuration, accounts, logs and files placed under its working directory. First boot creates the admin account and turns off credential-free administration from the local proxy. In-app self-update is disabled because the image is immutable.

Can you self-host HFS with Docker?

Yes. For HFS Docker hosting, the template runs the upstream rejetto/hfs v0.56.0 image, pinned by digest, as a single container with one persistent volume. xCloud's nginx owns HTTPS and forwards requests to the localhost-only port, and HFS is set not to grant admin access to proxied local traffic.

Is HFS free and open source?

The software is open source under the GPL-3.0 licence, so HFS has no licence fee. xCloud's charge covers the Cloud VPS holding it plus the deployment. Storage for the files you share comes from that server's disk, so very large libraries need a plan that fits them.

How much RAM does HFS need?

The manifest floor is 512 MB of RAM with one core and 2 GB of disk. Disk need is driven mostly by the files you upload and the logs HFS retains. The 6 GB plan sold here is well above the memory floor and gives room for a large file collection.

How do I sign in to HFS?

Open your HTTPS address and sign in as admin with the password from your credentials panel. It initializes the administrator only while HFS configuration is empty, so editing the environment value later changes nothing. Rotate the password from inside the HFS administration interface instead.

Can people upload files to HFS?

Yes. Upstream lists resumable uploads and downloads, and accounts with permissions. Apply least-privilege read, list and upload permissions to each virtual folder before sharing it publicly. For very large uploads, review the xCloud nginx limit and the HFS limit together.

How do I back up HFS?

Back up the hfs_data volume, which holds HFS configuration, account password verifiers, logs and any files stored under its working directory. If you map virtual folders to other paths, include those too. Restore under the same project identity and test it.

How do I upgrade HFS?

Version v0.56.0 is fixed by digest and in-app self-update is off, so a catalog re-sync reaches new installs only. Back up hfs_data, read the upstream release notes, then adopt a newer template version. Afterwards check admin login, folder permissions and uploads.

Can I run HFS in the cloud on xCloud?

Yes. HFS cloud use means the file server sits on a dedicated Cloud VPS behind your domain and a certificate. A server you already rent elsewhere can be connected as self-managed with this same template; size its disk for the files you share.

Does HFS have an administration interface?

Yes. Upstream includes an admin web interface where you configure virtual folders, accounts, permissions, plug-ins and real-time connection monitoring. Open it after signing in as admin. Because the template disables credential-free local administration, the page is reachable only with the admin login, not just from the proxy.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There is no lock-in — cancel any time. Hosting is billed monthly and charged for what you actually use, so when you delete the server the unused balance is refunded to your account, less up to 10% in payment-processing fees.
